Minecraft had an eventful year in 2024. Mojang Studios celebrated the game's 15th anniversary with loads of new events and giveaways, and announced several major development changes for the future. While this year was massive for them, the next year is also slated to be quite unique. The community will now see how Mojang works with its new development timeline in 2025.

Here is how 2025 is expected to be an eventful and surprising year for Minecraft and its fanbase. Read on!

How 2025 will be different for Minecraft and its player base

Back in September 2024, Mojang released a blog post announcing their completely revamped development cycle. They stated that they will be dividing their annual Minecraft Live event into two. This meant they would host two live events each year, starting from 2025.

During the events, they usually announce all the new things they have been working on and celebrate the community's contribution to their games. This will now occur twice a year.

Hence, players can expect a live event early in the year, around spring or summer, and the second one during autumn or winter.

In the blog post, they also announced the removal of mob vote competition. They already hosted a live event in September 2024 without the mob vote and will continue to do so in 2025.

Lots of smaller game drops

The first major development tweak that Mojang announced in their blog post was that they will now release loads of smaller updates called "game drops." As per the developers, these will contain fewer fresh features due to their smaller size, but they will be released frequently throughout the year.

The Minecraft community got a taste of the game drop timeline in 2024 itself, with the release of Bundles of Bravery and The Gardens Awakens, both of which were released in the span of a few months.

Therefore, in 2025, Mojang will put out a bunch of smaller game drops with a small list of fresh updates. The Swedish game company will reveal details about future drops in their bi-annual live events and monthly videos on YouTube.

No guarantee of a major update

Though Mojang stated that they will be focused on releasing smaller game drops, they also mentioned that they will keep an eye on expanding the title through bigger updates.

Up until now, the game has always received at least one major update every year. Hence, there is a chance that the developers could release, or at least hint toward, a bigger update apart from regular game drops.

Of course, 2025 will bring lots of surprises to the game's vast community as no one knows for sure how Mojang will shape Minecraft moving forward. As of this writing, the devs have not revealed anything about their future plans since The Garden Awakens drop.
