The highlight of the Minecraft 1.21.40 update is the addition of bundles, which essentially lets players stack different blocks or items together in the same inventory slot. It allows players to store a stack of 64 mixed items (including other bundles), making it a great feature to use while farming for resources.

The bundles let players pack items together and also have a tooltip that allows players to see what's inside. Players can select any of the visible items to pull out of the bundle in-game. Currently, there are 16 possible color variants of the item:

  • White
  • Light Gray
  • Gray
  • Black
  • Brown
  • Red
  • Orange
  • Yellow
  • Green
  • Lime
  • Light Blue

2) Hardcore mode

Next on the list is the introduction of the new Hardcore game mode to the Bedrock edition. It is built upon the current survival mode where the player's world is set to Hard difficulty along with a permadeath feature, ensuring that they cannot respawn after dying.

Once Hardcore mode is selected, the world is locked to the highest difficulty and cannot be changed using commands or options. This mode offers no second chances — players who die can only spectate their world after being eliminated. No commands, charms, or totems will bring them back to life. They can still explore the world and watch others but are not allowed to interact or rebuild.

The Minecraft 1.21.40 update also brings this difficulty mode in Minecraft Realms with a world creation screen that enables players to create Hardcore Realms in-game.

Note: Mojang has issued a warning to players regarding potential bugs and requested them to regularly back up their worlds to prevent corruption or potential issues.

3) Improvements to the creative inventory

The Minecraft 1.21.40 update introduced a host of changes to the position of items and blocks in the creative inventory, reorganizing them to ensure that the placement and classification are more accurate. Trial Chamber items like the trial keys and the ominous bottles have been moved to the keys and potions categories, respectively.

Similarly, the stone group has been moved into the nature tab, with stone being made the primary block of the stone group and reshuffled to the front of the listing. Additionally, stone-based blocks like the tuff and polished tuff have been placed alongside blocks like basalt and smooth basalt within the stone group.

The copper family has received a major overhaul, where raw iron, raw copper, and raw gold have been reordered as raw copper, raw iron, and raw gold to better reflect the progression. Copper doors have been listed under doors while the copper trapdoors have been placed next to other non-trap trapdoors. Metals are now sorted based on block type and then the oxidation level.

Many such changes have also been introduced to bricks and dirt as part of the overall balancing and reshuffling in the creative inventory within the Minecraft 1.21.40 update.

The Minecraft 1.21.40 update also introduces a host of changes and updates to the behavior of the in-game mobs. As part of the update, polar bears now drop cooked fish when eliminated by fire or lava. Additionally, pets like wolves, cats, and parrots will now seamlessly teleport to their owners when panicking. They will also teleport when caught in a fight alone.

As part of the balancing updates, pigling mobs will no longer pick up and admire powered rail items, making it easier for players to continue redstone-based builds like the insta-kill Auto turret. Carved pumpkins and skulls now rotate in sync with the bogged mob's head when worn.

Additionally, the Minecraft 1.21.40 update ensures that the breeze mob can no longer jump away from a player if it is atop a honey block. The breeze has also received an update that buffs its jump boost and allows it to jump higher. Bats have also received new rules, allowing them to spawn at any height, and can now only spawn in stone, diorite, granite, deepslate andesite, or tuff blocks.

5) Changes to ensure vanilla parity

One of the most crucial features of Minecraft 1.21.40 update is regarding the changes introduced to ensure parity in vanilla gameplay of both Bedrock and Java editions. As part of the Minecraft 1.21.40 update, creepers now drop a music disc upon being killed by a bog, similar to their Java edition behavior. The bogged mob will now drop poison arrows when eliminated by mobs tamed by a player.

Additionally, the fill chance of mushroom stems used on the Composter has been changed from 85% to 65%. The all-sided pore mushroom block has been removed from the creative inventory to create parity with the Java edition.

The enchanted apples now give the regeneration II effect instead of regeneration V, while placing cocoa beans now plays a sound. Bee hives and bee nests have also received parity updates, rendering them unsuitable for use as fuel in furnaces anymore.

As for commands, the Effect command has received the ability to enact effect removal as well as a specific effect removal option, while identical lodestones can now be stacked up to 64.
