The mace in Minecraft 1.21 is the latest unique weapon to be introduced to Mojang's sandbox title. While it has some similarities with other in-game weapons, there are also plenty of aspects that set it apart. From its incredibly slow attack cooldown to the damage scaling of its smash attack, there's a lot to get familiar with when it comes to the mace in the Tricky Trials update.

While some players may already be familiar with the mace in Minecraft 1.21 to some degree, there are some interesting facts about the weapon that they may not be readily aware of. With that in mind, it doesn't help to review some important aspects of the mace and its operation.

5 facts about the mace in Minecraft 1.21 that fans should know

1) It has two methods of repair

While many weapons can only be repaired with another weapon of the same type, the mace in Minecraft 1.21 is a bit different. When its sizable durability is lowered to the point of being broken, players can use the anvil and have two options available to them. They can repair the mace with another, like many weapons, or they can directly repair it with breeze rods.

If players have plenty of extra breeze rods from defeating breezes in trial chambers, they won't need to worry about crafting another mace just to repair the one they have.

2) Its attack has an immense cooldown in Java Edition

The mace in Minecraft 1.21 can be an incredibly powerful weapon, but players need to be well aware of its cooldown. With an attack speed of 0.6 and a cooldown of 1.67 in Java Edition, the mace's attacks must be used carefully to ensure optimal damage output. However, in Bedrock Edition, this isn't necessarily a problem since the mace has no cooldown.

Still, if players are using the mace in Java Edition 1.21, they'll need to take into account that it takes time for the weapon to recover after an attack. This may not make it ideal for group engagements unless players are able to use their mobility to aid in the mace's recovery.

3) They can break certain entities without losing durability in Java Edition

While both the smash attack and the standard attack of the mace in Minecraft 1.21 ordinarily cause it to lose one durability point, there are some circumstances where it won't lose durability. Specifically, if players in Java Edition use the mace to break entities like boats and minecarts (which they can accomplish in one hit), the mace's durability won't be reduced as a result.

This is a small fact to know and isn't necessarily vital since the mace has 500 durability in Java and 501 in Bedrock, but it's worth keeping in mind just in case.

4) The activation window of the smash attack

The smash attack that gains damage output as players fall is undoubtedly the largest draw of the mace in Minecraft 1.21. However, there are a few things to note regarding its activation window. The smash attack window will begin once a player has fallen 1.5 blocks in height. The smash attack will also ignore the ordinary weapon cooldown.

Moreover, it's important to note that elytra flight doesn't accumulate fall distance for the mace, and players under the effect of Slow Falling will also not be able to use the smash attack at all.

5) Certain enchantments are mutually exclusive

Like previous weapons, not every mace enchantment in the 1.21 update will be compatible with its counterparts. Four enchantments can be applied to the mace. However, they can't be applied together on the same mace in Survival Mode. These enchantments are Density, Breach, Smite, and Bane of Arthropods.

While players can use datapacks or commands to circumvent this, if their cheats aren't enabled, they should be aware of these mutually exclusive enchantments before they begin enchanting their mace.
