When the official trailer of the Minecraft motion picture dropped, the excitement amongst fans was off the roof. However, the trailer did not create a positive impact on the community. While many things about it irked players, the movie's official title confused most. A question that comes up about the name is why it wasn't called “The Minecraft Movie" instead.
In the recent MC Live event, film director Jared Hess cleared the confusion about the naming of the movie. Here’s why they came up with the title for the upcoming film based on the blocky game.
Why is it called A Minecraft Movie?

Jared Hess sat down with Torfi Frans Olafsson to reveal insights about the upcoming film. Amongst many other reasons behind the creative decisions for the motion picture, the director said coming up with the particular title of the movie was intentional.
The film is about a group of misfits who end up in the blocky world of Minecraft and is not an official story about the origins of the game. Just like any other playthrough a player begins with, this is the characters’ story. So calling it “The Minecraft Movie” would not send the right message, as it is a story about specific characters of the film.
The makers also mentioned that Steve is not a character in the game, but what players make of him. Every Steve is unique, and that is exactly what they have tried to do here. Jack Black’s character is a unique Steve with his own story. This could be why his appearance is so different from what players are used to seeing in the game.

Apart from these insights, we also saw a short clip from the upcoming movie. The scene shows Steve explaining the process of crafting to the other characters. Garrett, played by Jason Momoa, then tries to craft something using whatever resources he can find. This is why he made the twin bucket in the trailer, something that does not exist in the game.
The makers of the movie also explained why they decided to go with the live-action route. Since there are many great animated series made by fans of the game, the makers wanted to do something that had never been done before. Their intention was to see what would happen if real people came into the blocky world to experience it.
