The best mining level for iron in Minecraft Bedrock lies at Y level 16 and within the range of 80 to 384. Historically, the largest deposits of iron ore are usually found along level 232 and gradually reduce as you go in either direction of the range. You will also find a large concentration of the resource in the -24 to -56 range after the Y level 16.

Iron ore can also replace blocks like stone, andesite, and deepslate. The resulting blocks, like deepslate iron ore, can be mined for iron.

Additionally, the game tries to generate iron ore in different batches and Y levels:

  • 90 times per chunk in blobs of 0-16 in Y Levels 80 to 384
  • 10 times per chunk in blobs of 0-16 in Y Levels -24 to -56
  • 10 times per chunk in blobs of 0-5 in Y Levels -64 to -72

In Minecraft Bedrock, you can mine iron ore with a stone pickaxe or higher (a wooden pickaxe takes longer and is not recommended) enchanted with Silk Touch. If your pickaxe is not enchanted, mining will reward you with raw iron, which can be smelted into iron ingots.

Here's how fast you can obtain iron ore/iron using different tiers of pickaxes:

Pickaxe typeTime (in sec)
Wooden Axe7.5
Stone Axe1.15
Iron Axe0.75
Diamond Axe0.6
Golden Axe1.25
Netherite Axe0.5

Additionally, you can use TnT to blow up an entire iron ore vein or blocks of deepslate iron. Using the explosive will reward you with raw iron instead of iron ore, which can be smelted and refined. Smelted iron ingots can be used to craft important blocks, such as anvils, blast furnaces, cauldrons, and more.

As with most other blocks, iron ore is stackable up to 64 units in one inventory slot. If you are out to farm iron ore, you can carry a bundle with you to be able to maximize your storage and mine more.

Once you have your storage sorted and are armed with the knowledge of the best mining level for iron, you should prioritize stocking up on sticks and a crafting table. This is so you can craft a pickaxe on the fly and continue mining without fail.

Remember to be aware of your surroundings, as caves and underground structures contain some nasty surprises like creepers, skeletons, zombies, and more.
