Minecraft has a lot of mobs. That should come as no shock to players, as it's easy to see dozens of different mobs in a single day. However, not many of them can be tamed and used by players to make survival easier. Thankfully, this is an area that mods have thoroughly fleshed out, adding and revamping the game's pets and their mechanics.

Seven of the best mods for adding extra friendly companions to the game's otherwise hostile survival worlds can be found detailed below, along with what makes the mod so great for potential allies.

7 of the best Minecraft companion mods

1) Alex's Mobs

  • Latest game version: 1.20.1
  • Creator: sbom_xela

Alex's Mobs is by far the best mod out there for players looking to add new Minecraft pets to their collection of adventuring allies. It adds a whopping 89 new mobs to the game, spread out across a huge number of different biomes. There are both fictional creatures, like the bone serpent, and creatures from nature, like bears and crocodiles.

What makes this a great mod for extra companions is that, as mentioned previously, a huge number of mobs found within Alex's Mobs can be tamed by the player. Being able to partner up with dozens of new mobs is a huge expansion on the vanilla game's pet systems.

2) Tameable Beasts

Tameable Beasts, as the name suggests, adds a number of new tameable animals to the game. These range from larger versions of living animals, such as rideable geckos and giant grasshoppers, as well as fantasy beasts, such as the fur golem and chikote. Each of these mobs also has several new items, foods, and features to go along with them, making this a surprisingly featured mod.

3) Modular Golems

  • Latest game version: 1.20
  • Creator: lcy0x1

Modular Golems give players the ability to craft several new types of golems to help fight off hostile mobs. They're large golems, similar to Minecraft iron golems, as well as humanoid and dog golems.

Humanoid golems stand out from vanilla ones, as they can use weapons, as well as shields and armor when fighting. Dog golems can be ridden by players and humanoid golems, making them amazing defensive utility options. There are also extra types of golems available for other mods, such as the Twilight Forest and Create, if Modular Golems is being used as part of a Minecraft modpack.

4) Friends & Foes

  • Latest game version: 1.21
  • Creator: Faboslav

Friends & Foes is another mob-based mod that adds adorable craftable companions to the game. This mod takes direct inspiration from the previous mob votes and adds many of the losing mobs into the game, such as the tuff and copper golems.

However, these two are also joined by other mobs, such as the moobloom, the rascal, and the glare, which can all be considered friendly faces while out adventuring, making this an even better companion mod.

5) Human Companions

  • Latest game version: 1.19.2
  • Creator: jus10wontons

Human Companions, as the name suggests, adds humanoid entities to Minecraft survival worlds that players can team up with. There are knights, archers, axeguards, and arbalists that players can find living peacefully in their randomly generated homes. They can be convinced to join players by being given food and even set to patrol areas.

6) Companion

  • Latest game version: 1.19.3
  • Creator: Snownee

Companion is quite a bit different than the rest of the mods mentioned so far. Rather than adding new Minecraft mobs to the game for players to tame, this mod instead aims to revamp and overhaul existing pet mechanics to make vanilla companions better.

The Companion mod does a ton of different things to make pets better. For example, the mod forces pets to teleport to players before being deloaded, allows pets to avoid combat when at low health, and even makes it so the sweeping edge Minecraft enchantment doesn't hurt friendly mobs.

7) Player Companions

  • Latest game version: 1.20.4
  • Creator: Kaworru

Player Compansions aims to add a large number of creatures to the world that will follow, protect, and help players. Quite a few options are available to players within this Minecraft mod, such as snails, slimes, tiny ghasts, pixies, faeries, dinosaurs, and insects.

Each of these has a different type, such as collector, follower, or healer, that determines what benefits and qualities it offers to players. This gives the allies found in the mod quite a bit of customization, which makes this one of the better companion mods out there.
