Minecraft has all kinds of mobs that spawn in a single world. While some are fictional, others are real-life animals that Mojang added to the game. One of them is a tropical fish that can be naturally found in various ocean biomes, most commonly in warm oceans. These fish can be obtained by either killing them or putting them in a bucket.

When the question comes about whether you can eat them, the answer is no, at least not in survival mode. Let's explore more about tropical fish in Minecraft.

As mentioned above, you simply cannot eat tropical fish in Minecraft survival mode. When you have the mob as an item in your hands, nothing will happen when you hold the right mouse button, which usually starts the eating animation if an item is edible.

However, one interesting fact is that you can eat tropical fish in creative mode. When the fish is equipped and you press the right mouse button, the eating animation will show up, implying that you are consuming the mob.

Since creative mode does not have any health or hunger bar, the game does not show any effects of eating a tropical fish. Furthermore, it does not show any negative status effects as well.

While you cannot eat tropical fish in survival mode, most mobs cannot consume it either. Axolotls are the only mob that can consume tropical fish to breed and grow.

You have to bring a live tropical fish in a bucket and feed it to Axolotls for them to breed and grow. If a dead tropical fish is offered, the mob will not accept it.

A live tropical fish can be caught by simply using an iron bucket. Tropical fish in a bucket can also be bought by a wandering trader for five emeralds.
