Minecraft's armor trims were one of the most welcomed customization features in recent memory, providing players the ability to add even more visual flair to their armor by combining armor trim pattern templates with different resources. However, some players have likely wondered if there's a way to remove trims from armor. The answer is yes, but it might be expensive depending on the armor.
While it's possible to replace an existing armor trim with another on the smithing table block, completely removing an armor trim in Minecraft will require an identical armor piece with no trim applied to it as well as a crafting table (or at least your inventory's crafting menu).

If you want to completely remove an armor trim from a piece of armor in Minecraft (at least for the moment), you'll need an identical armor piece that has had no trim applied to it. For example, if you have a diamond helmet with a trim applied to it, you'll need an identical diamond helmet with no trim to combine with it. After that, you can use your crafting menu or a crafting table to facilitate the removal.
Regardless of whether you use your personal crafting menu by opening your inventory or via a placed crafting table, the process of removing an armor trim in Minecraft is incredibly simple. However, for the sake of clarity, you can find the steps for removing an armor trim below:
- Open either your personal crafting menu by opening your inventory or place/find a crafting table and interact with it by right-clicking it or pressing the "use" button on your controller. If you don't have a crafting table, create one by combining four wooden plank blocks of any type in your personal crafting grid.
- Begin by placing your trimmed piece of armor into the crafting grid. Any space in the grid will do just fine.
- Follow this by taking your "blank" piece of armor that matches your trimmed armor piece but has no trim and placing it horizontally adjacent to the trimmed armor. This should cause a blank armor piece of the same type to appear in the output slot of the crafting menu.
- Remove the newly trim-free armor piece from the output slot.
That's all there is to it! As previously noted, this method of removing armor trims can get expensive fast if done too often since it requires blank armor pieces, especially if you're removing trims from the likes of diamond and netherite armor in Minecraft. With that in mind, make sure you're committed to applying the armor trims of your choosing to high-grade armor so you won't have to remove them.
