Minecraft Java offers you the option to turn on subtitles. Since the title does not have any dialogue, doing this will make the game show written descriptions of ambient noises, such as footsteps. However, can you turn on subtitles in the Bedrock version? Unfortunately, this functionality is only limited to the Java Edition. As such, you can't enable the option in this version.

Minecraft is available across multiple devices. This includes the Mac, PC, and smartphones. The game also comes in two versions — the Java Edition and the Bedrock Edition.

With that in mind, let's take a look at why the latter doesn't have subtitles.

Possible reason why Minecraft Bedrock does not have subtitles

While it is unclear why the Bedrock Edition doesn't have subtitles, a potential reason could be that it is somewhat of a watered-down version of the Java Edition that allows lower-end devices to run the game properly. As such, it doesn't include every feature the other version does.

That said, Mojang Studios is slowly trying to bridge the gap between the two versions. For example, recently the Minecraft Bedrock finally got the Hardcore mode after years of waiting. Moreover, both versions now offer the ability to leash boats. Even the Java Edition's world generation has been added to the Bedrock Edition.

These examples show that the differences between the two editions will be negligible one day. Players often ask Mojang Studios to add subtitles to the Bedrock Edition. Going by how fast they are working to improve the game, this version might get the feature by the end of 2024.

If you have Minecraft's Java Edition, you can easily turn on the subtitles in the Settings. This version is available only for the PC — on which it comes bundled with the other edition — and Mac. If you play the game on Xbox, PlayStation, iOS, Android, or Nintendo Switch, that means you have the Bedrock Edition.
