One of the most important parts of Minecraft's long and storied history was the addition of survival mode in the 0.24_SURVIVAL_TEST from September 2009. Regular survival was soon joined by both superflat and hardcore as alternative game mode options. However, Mojang hasn't added a new game mode like this since 1.1, despite there being a ton of wonderful ideas out there.

Seven amazing examples of great custom game modes created by the community that Mojang could add to the game, along with what makes these modes so fun, can be found in detail below.

Seven fun custom game modes that should be added to vanilla Minecraft

1) Skyblock

Skyblock is one of, if not the, oldest custom game modes out there. It spawns players on a small island with a chest of basic materials and a single tree. Players must then use their game knowledge to build up resources and expand outwards. This game mode is known for inspiring gorgeous floating Minecraft builds and helping players learn interesting niche game mechanics.

There are also a ton of different ways that Mojang could make a potential official skyblock. They could go for a classic skyblock experience with nothing but the initial islands, or lean into the procedural generation the game is known for and have infinitely generating random biome islands. The potential here is incredible.

2) Customized worlds

Customized worlds are an interesting potential game mode because they used to actually exist in vanilla; however, they were removed in the 1.13 Minecraft update. These worlds gave players an unprecedented amount of control over how the world was generated. Players could disable and change the generation of particular structures and biomes, as well as the size of these biomes.

Other advanced settings allowed players to control specific ore settings and generation rules and even increase or decrease terrain scaling to control how the world's landscapes generate. Needless to say, reintroducing this game mode would be great, as it would give players the ability to create truly personalized worlds in-game whenever they want to.

3) Infinite dimensions

Infinite dimensions are technically another official feature that was removed from the game. This game mode was released as the April Fool's Minecraft update for 2020 and is known as the Ultimate Content update. The update allowed players to throw custom books into Nether portals to convert them into portals to randomly generated dimensions.

While the initial version had quite a few rough edges that resulted in many of these random dimensions being quite harsh on the eyes and hard to traverse, a refined version would make for a very fun new game mode.

4) One Block

One Block is one of the more recent custom game modes. Survival worlds made using this game mode start players on a single block. This block is special, however, as it replaces itself randomly once broken. There are different stages of one block, each representing a different Minecraft biome or dimension. There are also rare chests that give players otherwise unobtainable items.

This is a fun RNG-dependent twist on a traditional skyblock style of survival. The random element of these worlds adds a ton of re-playability, which is what makes it a great potential game mode for the base game.

5) Lucky Block

Lucky Block is another modern custom game mode. This mode features randomly generated blocks scattered throughout the world, known as lucky blocks. When broken, there will be a powerful random effect that could be good, such as dropping enchanted tools, or bad, like spawning a warden.

This is a fantastic, chaotic game mode, which leads to unique situations that you won't see in vanilla gameplay.

6) Random drops

Most of the custom game modes mentioned so far have focused on changing how worlds generate. A random drop game mode, on the other hand, would affect the items that are dropped. This chaotic game mode makes it so that all mob and block drops are completely random. This means a dirt block might drop a diamond when broken, while ancient debris could drop a feather.

This would be a fantastic way to play the game on a custom Minecraft server with friends, as its chaotic nature would inevitably lead to different adventures.

7) Stoneblock

Stoneblock is essentially an inverted skyblock. Rather than islands over an infinite void, players spawn in small air pockets within dimensions of infinite Minecraft ore and caves. A small bonus chest could be included with a sapling to make it possible to get wood, which would make it possible to thrive.

Having to expand outwards to make room for things will also lead to interesting builds, as players will essentially be building in reverse. The infinite stone will also lead to interesting block palettes and Minecraft decorations to make the most of the flat gray textures.
