"Did Roblox buy Minecraft or something?": Player discovers bizarre censorship in Bedrock Edition

Minecraft has a very large and diverse player base. From adults to kids, players of all ages enjoy the title as it lets them expand their creative skills. This also means that Mojang Studios has to take measures to ensure that the game remains a safe space for everyone. This is the reason why many words and actions in the blocky world are censored. But is it too much sometimes?

A Redditor by the name of titanicboi1 recently shared an image on the Minecraft subreddit showing a wooden sign with something written on it. The problem was that a part of the word was censored ("#### farm") by the game. The original poster asked:

“Did Roblox buy Minecraft or something”

For those unaware, Roblox is a game predominantly played by children, so it comes with a lot of restrictions, especially the censoring of words.

A Redditor by the name of tripegle gave their take on the matter, saying Mojang Studios filters out so many words in Minecraft that it seems like random terms are disallowed instead of actual bad ones.

User teedyay said the game censors even normal text if it deems it to be offensive. They then gave an example of how this censor system has actually led children to know more about slurs.

Replying to this comment, user Jacktheforkie asked how normal words get censored and why the game believes them to be slurs. User teedyay replied with a lengthy paragraph explaining the whole situation and how this mindless censoring can lead to the opposite effect.

According to user prosteprostecihla, Mojang Studios should make a kid version of the title and implement all the profanity filters there instead of doing it for the original game. Another user by the name of SpookyWeebou replied with another suggestion: the developer should make a profanity filter setting that lets users turn it on or off.

Does Minecraft need censorship?

The online version of Mojang Studios' title definitely requires moderation and censorship as there are multiple players of different age groups often playing on the same server. However, the question is whether the game’s offline, single-player version should be censored or not.

Perhaps Mojang Studios could add an option that turns the censoring feature on or off to let users have more control and play the game however they want. Since the Minecraft 1.21 update did not add such an update, we can only hope that the next one does.
