One of the many reasons why Minecraft has been among the most popular games for more than 15 years is the community. Members come up with exciting events, challenges, mobs, and other improvements to the game, allowing Minecraft to be played and experienced in a plethora of different ways. Shaders allow players to change how the game looks. It can be made more realistic with real lighting effects or it can be turned to look like Lego. The possibilities are endless.

A Minecraft player and Reddit user named TheJinxedArtist shared some images on the game's subreddit showing a VHS-style shader pack that has an old, pixelated, and dark appearance. While the post did not show any daytime images, all the nighttime scenes look terrifying and give a horror-game vibe.

The original poster replied to the comment saying they have tried it themselves and it was definitely more scary than regular caving.

The limited resolution and the dark vignette would make seeing in the dark more difficult. The original poster also said that there would be a custom torch feature that would help players see better.

In another comment, the original poster listed down all the features that have already been added to the shader pack and all the features that will be added as development continues.

The added features include luma and chroma compression that reduces the available light and colors in a scene. There’s also static and sharpening, lens distortion, squashed aspect ratio, and more.

What’s great is that the shaders will be available on Modrinth and are called MC VHS shaders. This is the first version so players can expect some errors and bugs. The original poster mentioned that they are working on making it more stable and bug-free.

Praises came from all directions with u/tripegle commenting how this shader pack reminded them of bodycam shaders and how fun it would be to explore ancient cities with it applied. The original poster thanked them. Another user named Square-Biscotti8537 also found the Minecraft shaders very cool.

Shaders for Minecraft

This is not the only shader one can get for the game. There are multiple options to choose from, with BSL shaders being one of the most popular ones. BSL completely changes how the game looks because let's face it, no matter how fun the game is, it looks severely outdated. Shaders can get rid of this shortcoming.

The great thing about shaders is that players can make the game look however they want. Them being free and made by community members is a cherry on the cake. There are multiple shaders to choose from and the options are virtually inexhaustible.
