Why Minecraft's future update is currently a mystery
No information about an update's announcement date

Previously, Mojang has always hinted towards future updates whenever they have released their latest updates. By the time Minecraft Live was hosted by the developer, the community had some hint on what the next update could be about.
This time, however, there is absolutely no information about Minecraft's future updates. After The Garden Awakens drop where they released Pale Garden and Creaking mob, they have not revealed what they could be adding next.
Furthermore, we do not have a clue about when Mojang will announce the next update since there is no confirmed or even rumored time window for the next Minecraft Live event.
No confirmed date about the bi-annual Minecraft Live

Back in September 2024, Mojang released a blog post announcing a massive change in their development cycle. They stated that they will release smaller updates in the form of game drops, and will divide their annual live event into two.
Previously, enthusiasts knew the time window for Mojang's annual event, which took place sometime in October or November. For 2025, however, it is hard to speculate when Mojang's first live event could take place since they have now divided it into two per year.
Since Mojang has always announced the game's future updates in their live events, the game's future has become even more mysterious.
Christmas holidays could delay Mojang announcements
It is safe to say that the game's vast community might not receive any news about future updates any time soon. This is particularly because of the upcoming Christmas and New Year holidays. After working hard on the 1.21 update and several smaller game drops, Mojang staff could be taking a long holiday before entering 2025's development timeline.
Hence, players might have to wait a little longer to receive any new information about Minecraft's future.
