Minecraft is a game that allows you to let your creativity run wild and create a blocky version of anything from the real or fictional world. Talented builders have made large structures such as fictional and real cities, massive towers, and even a 1:2 scale model of Mount Everest. But despite the game having so much potential, it still lacks some basic things that one might expect it to have. The most notable one is the lack of machines and modes of transport, like working ships.

Given that the game’s map has vast seas and a major appeal of Minecraft is exploration, a working ship would be a perfect addition. The small boat is tedious and quite slow. And while we might have to wait for Mojang Studios to add a working ship, there are some mods that can get it done instantly. So, in this article, we will be looking at the two popular mods to add working ships to Minecraft.

Technically, you can make a model of a ship in the game. In fact, you can find wrecked ships in the ocean with some decent loot items as well. And with some Redstone engineering using pistons and other blocks, you might be able to create something that resembles a ship, but it would not be one exactly. So, to add a working ship, you will have to get third-party mods for Minecraft.

The first is the Eureka! Ships! For Valkyrien Skies mod. The reason why we are putting it as out first preference is it directly adds working ships to Minecraft without the need for you to do much. It supports both the Fabric and Forge mod loaders and adds only the necessary things. So there are no bloat items to make things complicated.

The mod pack requires you to have Valkyrien Skies, Architectury, and Cloth Config API to make it work. The great thing about it is that it also adds a ton of other large vehicles, such as air balloons, and even makes wooden blanks float. This means you can make a raft of any size you want.

The other option is the very popular Minecraft mod, Create. The reason we put it as our second preference is because Create is not specifically made for adding ships to the game. It adds a ton of different things, such as pipes, engines, motors, etc., which allows you to create not only ships but also cars, planes, and other machines. But by understanding the basics, you will be able to create a working ship using the items added with the Create mod.

Coming to the next important bit: downloading and installing Minecraft mods. Both Create and Eureka! Ships! For Valkyrien Skies have a similar installation process. So follow these steps to add the mod you prefer:

  • Download either mod from its official page, Eureka! Ships! For Valkyrien mod or Create. Both are available on CurseForge.
  • Once the download is completed, keep the file handy as you will need it later for the installation process.
  • Go to the search bar from your Windows home screen and then search for “Run.”
  • In the “Run” search bar, type “%APPDATA%” which will open a new folder.
  • In the folder, look for the “.minecraft” folder and then look for the “mods” folder in it.
  • Once you find it, copy and paste the mod you want to have and then close the window.
  • Launch the game, but make sure you launch it with the specific mod loader - Fabric or Forge.

The mods should be installed in Minecraft. If not, go to the mod loader settings and enable the mods.

That was the process of getting both the mods downloaded. Make sure that you have all the other mentioned files installed so that the mods run properly. That’s how you can add working ships to the game. Hopefully, Mojang Studios will add something in the Minecraft 1.22 update that allows players to create large machines like these, but that seems like a pipe dream.
