Minecraft allows you to craft a ton of different things using the crafting table. Banners are one of these that were introduced to the game in 2014 and have gone through a series of changes to the point that you can make a plethora of different patterns. All of this was possible with the addition of the new block called the ‘Loom.’ While it was possible to make various designs before the loom, it just took a lot of effort that did not justify the end product.
So in this article, we will explain how you can not only craft banners in Minecraft but also make different patterns.

Here’s the good news: crafting a banner in Minecraft is not only simple but also quite cheap. To make a simple banner, all you need is a crafting table, some wool blocks, and a stick. Wool blocks can be obtained either by killing sheep or using shears on them. Sticks are some of the most abundant items in the game.
To craft a banner:
- Place six wool blocks on the top six slots of the crafting grid and one stick at the lower middle slot.
- This will give you a banner of the same color as the wool block used.
- Once you have crafted the banner, move on to the designing part to customize it even further.
How to customize banners in Minecraft
While you can make different patterns and even write down different English alphabets using the crafting table, banner, and dye, to make detailed custom patterns, you need the Loom block to make detailed, custom banner patterns.
With the banner crafted, you need to craft the Loom. All you need is two strings that can be obtained by killing spiders and two wood planks. Place them on the crafting table and the Loom should be ready.
When you open the Loom, you will notice three slots that might seem confusing. The first slot is for the banner, the second one is for the dye, and the third is for the banner pattern.
Place the banner and the dye in their designated slots and you will get a ton of different patterns to choose from. You can layer these patterns to make your own unique banner patterns.
Apart from making custom patterns, you can also get special banner patterns by combining paper and specific items in the game. For example, you can combine paper with the creeper head to get the creeper banner pattern. This would go great with the creeper cape that was added to the game recently.
By layering different banner patterns, you can make countless different banners featuring flags, random items, mobs, etc. The possibilities are endless. A Minecraft player created the video of Bad Apple using just banner patterns!
