As the name implies, the creaking heart block is directly connected to the new Creaking mob. The wood-like creature in the Pale Garden biome spawns through this block at night. They are buried deep in pale oak trees and the area is full of them. At night, they activate and spawn the monster that resembles wood in the biome.

Mojang clarified during Minecraft Live that the Creaking would not die or even take damage if a player attacks it with a melee or a ranged weapon. Despite having only half a heart of health, the mob cannot be harmed by traditional attacks and explosions.

Instead, the Creaking will continue to negate all attacks because it is linked to its heart block, which is outside its body. The only method to defeat the Creaking is to locate and destroy its respective creaking heart block. The mob will disintegrate and perish as soon as the block is damaged by any tool or hand.

As Mojang added another feature to make the creaking heart block more useful and worth a player's time. They added a new material called resin which was directly connected to the Creaking and its heart.

Now, every time a player strikes the wood-like mob, a substance called resin will form on the nearby pale oak logs that surround the creaking heart. The block will essentially produce more and more resin clumps around the logs as players continue to attack the three-eyed monster. On pale oak logs, these resin clumps will resemble little orange droplets.

The creaking heart itself drops anywhere between one and three resin clumps if it is not broken with a silk-touch enchanted tool.
