Minecraft 1.21.1 debuted for Java Edition on August 8, 2024, as a hotfix update to fix a few critical exploits that were being used to intentionally crash multiplayer servers. Language support for the Tzotzil and Belarusian languages was also introduced in this update. Because this hotfix prevents intentional server crashing, there's little doubt you'll want to download this update, but how can you do so?
The process is pretty simple when you use the official Minecraft Launcher client, which will automatically update Java Edition to 1.21.1 when attempting to run the game. While there may be other options available, updating the game through the official launcher is arguably the most direct option so you can spend more time enjoying the game.

Once you've installed the Minecraft Launcher, updating Java Edition can be accomplished with the press of a button. As long as you're connected to the internet and decide to boot up Java Edition, the launcher will download all of the necessary files and folders to facilitate version 1.21.1., regardless of whether or not you've installed Java Edition on your computer.
You can download Java Edition 1.21.1 with the following steps:
- If you haven't already, head to this Minecraft link and download the official launcher client. Run the installer and proceed through the setup wizard to install the launcher to your computer, then open the launcher. Otherwise, if you've installed the launcher already, simply open it and continue.
- On the game list to the left of the launcher window, select Java Edition.
- Under the splash art to the right of the window, you'll notice a button that reads "latest release" that should include "1.21.1". Ensure these two things are displayed, then click the green install button (or play button if you already have Java Edition installed). If you're connected to the internet, the launcher will download all of the necessary assets, update the game to version 1.21.1, and then run it.
That's all there is to it. Thanks to the launcher and as long as you've got a stable internet connection, there should be no issues downloading or updating to Java Edition 1.21.1. Note that these steps will also apply to future Java updates beyond 1.21.1, as Mojang continues to release them and evolve the game over time.
While version 1.21.1 is simply a hotfix update, there's no doubt Mojang will introduce new content, blocks, mobs, and more in future updates.
