The blocky world of Minecraft seems almost infinite thanks to the procedurally generated nature of the game. This is why every new playthrough puts you in a unique world and experience. So, if you want to start a new game but with the same world as before, you can use the seed of the world.

However, locating the seed of a multiplayer server can be tricky, especially since not all servers willingly share this information. There are different ways of getting the seed of a Minecraft server, and this article will explain how you can do it with or without server access.

If you are hosting the game on your server, you can easily get access to the seed of the blocky world. Just follow some steps at the backend of the hosting platform and access the server console.

  • Access the Server console to open your server hosting platform’s control panel or terminal. This is where you can access all the information about the server and the game that is being hosted on it.
  • Enter the Command to find the seed. Type /seed into the server console and hit enter. In case this does not work, just write “seed” and wait for it to appear. The seed is a long string of numbers.

However, depending on the hosting service and the security level of the server, you might need to access the server configuration information to find the seed for the game world.

Things can get complicated for those without access to server controls. Without admin privileges, you cannot get the seed just via in-game commands. Since you cannot access the server as well, you need to take alternative routes.

To get the server seed without accessing the administrator panel or even the backend, you need to use third-party services such as MultiMC or World Downloader.

Keep in mind that these methods are a bit unreliable and depending on the version of Minecraft, it may or may not work. It is better to ask the server admin for the seed if it's possible before trying out these methods.

Here are the steps to follow. Note that things can get a little technical. The tutorial involves using the MultiMC application and World Downloader Mod. You can get MultiMC from its official website, while World Downloader is available on websites such as Curseforge. The names might be altered.

  • Download and install MultiMC and then add a Minecraft instance. You can do this by creating a new instance of Minecraft that matches the server version you want to access. You might also have to install the required version of Forge or Fabric if the server uses mods.
  • Install World Downloader Mod and then add World Downloader to your instance. Place the mod file into the mods folder of your MultiMC instance.
  • With all that done, launch Minecraft through MultiMC with the World Downloader mod enabled. Log in to the server where you have your world. Use World Downloader to get a copy of the world file locally.
  • Make sure that you move around the server world to save the chunks you need. World Downloader can only save chunks that you have visited.
  • Once you've captured the desired area, stop the download and save the world locally. Open the downloaded world in single-player mode and use the /seed command in the game chat. You might have to enable cheats from the pause menu.

That was the process of getting the server seed when you did not have access to the backend of the hosting service. Remember that it might not work since different hosting platforms and servers have different security measures. But it is certainly worth a try.
