Make sure that you have a shield as well. All of this will be needed as you enter the dangerous Nether dimension.

So mine as much as you can and find diamonds to make a diamond pickaxe. Use the diamond pickaxe to mine obsidian. It can take some time so be patient with it. While you need 12 obsidians to make the Nether portal, ensure you get a couple more just to be safe.
