How to get night vision in Minecraft

There are several different status effects that players can use to buff themselves during Minecraft survival. One of the most useful of these effects is the night vision effect, which, as the name suggests, allows players to see much easier in the dark. Light levels of zero, assuming the player is using fancy graphics, are increased to a whopping 12 or 13 light levels.

There are also a surprising number of ways to gain the effect, both in survival and for creative building, all of which can be found detailed below.

The easiest way to get the night vision effect is to brew potions for the buff. Night vision potions can be made by combining awkward potions with golden carrots. These alchemical concoctions cannot be enhanced with glowstone, but they can be extended with Minecraft redstone.

Additionally, these Minecraft potions can be made into splash potions using gunpowder and even lingering potions using rare dragon's breath. They will make it much easier to work on large projects on a survival server, as several players can gain the effect all at once.

Villagers

Villagers are also an incredible way to gain access to the night vision effect. Master fletchers have a chance to trade a random tipped arrow, which can include arrows tipped with night vision potions. Fletchers can also throw these tipped arrows at players with the hero of the village buff.

Bedrock players can also put night vision potions into a cauldron and manually tip arrows. Hopefully, this feature eventually comes to Java, as fletchers are the only reliable way to access tipped arrows in this version of the game, outside of Minecraft mob drops.

Outside of this, expert-level farmer villagers have a chance to trade suspicious stew that can apply the night vision effect. As with fletchers, this relies on RNG, so it might take several Minecraft villagers to find the trade.

The crafting recipe will require a single wooden bowl, a red mushroom, a brown mushroom, and then either a poppy or a torchflower. This version of the night vision effect lasts for five seconds on Java and between seven and 10 seconds on Bedrock. Players can also easily craft the night vision variety of this food

Getting night vision with commands

Night vision can also be applied using a command. The cheat in question is the aptly named "effect" command, which can add or remove any of the game's different status effects from entities. The full command to apply night vision permanently, without any annoying particles, is:

  • /effect give UserName minecraft:night_vision infinite 1 true

As previously mentioned, this command can give any status effect. To do this, simply replace "night_vision" with the name of a different effect. The duration can also be set by replacing the word "infinite." The "true" can also be changed to false, which will display the normal buff particles.
