Minecraft's 1.21 update has a heavy focus on its trial chambers. These structures are filled with new blocks and items to collect and use. One of these myriad blocks and items is the trial key, which can be useful for obtaining extra loot while exploring trial chambers.

Trial keys, like many aspects of Minecraft 1.21, is a creation explicitly made for use in trial chambers. There are multiple ways to obtain them, though their use is singular for the most part. With that in mind, let's take a look at how trial keys appear and are used.

You can obtain trial keys in Minecraft 1.21 from trial chamber entrance chests, decorated pots found in trial chamber corridors, and the trial spawner blocks littered throughout the chambers. In both Java and Bedrock Editions of the game, trial spawners are the most reliable way to get trial keys, but you might want to be aware of the drop rates as well.

Drop Rates for Trial Keys in Java and Bedrock Edition

  • Java Edition Trial Chambers: Corridor pots (2.8%), entrance chests (6.8%), trial spawners (50%).
  • Bedrock Edition Trial Chambers: Corridor pots (1.6% chance of 1-3 keys), entrance chests (6.8%), trial spawners (50%).

Corridor pots and entrance chests are openable with a right-click or the use/place item button on a controller. However, getting a trial key from a trial spawner will require you to approach a trial spawner and defeat all of the mobs it spawns. The trial spawner will dispense a cluster of items and go into cooldown.

What does the trial key do in Minecraft 1.21?

Currently, the only use for trial keys in Minecraft 1.21 (aside from placing them in an item frame for decoration) is to unlock standard vaults in trial chambers. These blocks can be found throughout trial chambers and can be recognized by the mouth-like face texture on the front of the block as well as the flames and items seen within.

Once you have a trial key, all you need to do is place the trial key in your hands via your hotbar and approach the vault block. Then, right-click or press the use/place item button to consume the key and unlock the vault. This will resultingly cause the vault to dispense a collection of different loot items before returning to its locked state.

It should be noted that vaults can only be opened once per player, so if you're in singleplayer, you'll have to find a different vault to open with your next trial key.
