To use smithing armor templates for customizing armor, you need the smithing table, the armor you want to customize, the smithing templates, and a mineral such as emerald, gold, diamond, quartz, amethyst, etc to give it the color you want. Here are the steps to achieve the customization:

• With everything in hand, head over to the smithing table and interact with it. This will open a recipe grid.
• Place the smithing template in the first slot.
• Place the armor you want to customize in the next slot. This could be a helmet, boots, chest piece, etc.
• Place the ingot or crystal that you want to customize the armor with. You can try different items to see which one looks the best.
