There was a time in Minecraft when the only way to make your armor look different was to dye the leather armor. This feature was added way back in 2012 and it just allowed you to make different-colored leather armor. But there was nothing for the other, more useful, armor such as those made of iron or diamond. However, all of that changed with the 1.20 update that introduced armor trims to the game and opened the floodgates of customizability.
In this article, we will show you all the ways of making your armor look cool in the game. It does not matter what kind of armor you have, be it the simple leather armor or the coveted netherite armor, there are millions of possibilities of customizing your armor.

Here’s an important bit of information. To make armor trims, you must get smithing templates. These are quite rare and can only be found later in the game. Here is a look at the easiest way of making your armor look better early in the game.
When you start a Minecraft playthrough, the first armor you should get is leather armor. The game has 16 color options to choose from and you can obtain the dye from various flowers. Once obtained, there are two different ways of dying the armor for Java and Bedrock editions.
For Java Edition:
- With the leather armor crafted, open the crafting table.
- Place the piece of armor you want to dye.
- Then place the coloring dye to color the armor piece.
For Bedrock Edition:
- You need to craft a cauldron first by using iron ingots as well as a bucket.
- Place the cauldron and fill it up with water.
- Use the dye on the filled cauldron to color it.
- Finally, use the armor you want to dye on the cauldron to transfer the color.
You can also color different parts of the armor separately to make it look unique. For example, you can make the armor pants blue while the chest piece yellow to make it look like the football kit of Brazil.
Using armor-smithing templates
Once you have progressed in the game, you can start customizing other armor such as the iron, diamond, or netherite armor. The two things you need to do this are the smithing table and the smithing templates. The smithing table can be crafted easily, but you need to find the smithing templates.
16 smithing templates can be found in loot chests in different areas such as the deep dark, the trial chambers, and bastion remnants. Try to collect as many of these as possible for maximum customization options.
To use smithing armor templates for customizing armor, you need the smithing table, the armor you want to customize, the smithing templates, and a mineral such as emerald, gold, diamond, quartz, amethyst, etc to give it the color you want. Here are the steps to achieve the customization:
- With everything in hand, head over to the smithing table and interact with it. This will open a recipe grid.
- Place the smithing template in the first slot.
- Place the armor you want to customize in the next slot. This could be a helmet, boots, chest piece, etc.
- Place the ingot or crystal that you want to customize the armor with. You can try different items to see which one looks the best.
With this, you will get a unique and cool-looking armor piece. Different smithing templates add different patterns to the armor. The possibilities of armor set customization are in millions. That’s how you can make your armor look cool. Equip a cape, especially the Minecraft anniversary cape to make your armor look even cooler.
