Fish farms in Minecraft were some of the most powerful farms available to players for a long time. They provided a way to grind for powerful enchanted books while away from the game, rendering the other means of enchanting mostly irrelevant. Fishing treasure was eventually nerfed on Java as a direct result of these farms. That being said, AFK fish farms are still very handy to have around. They can easily provide a food source for the early and mid-games and are decent totally AFK XP farms thanks to the mending enchantment.

Thankfully, AFK fish farms are still very cheap to build. The most expensive components of this build are the hoppers needed, along with the minecart and lava source block. Thankfully, there are no observers used in the build, which means it can be constructed before visiting the Nether.

1) Dig out a five-by-three pit

The first thing you'll need to do to make this AFK fish farm in Minecraft is dig out a deep and narrow pit. This channel needs to be a total of three blocks long and five blocks deep. This will keep much of the farm concealed underground.

2) Add the collection system

Jump into this hole and place down a double chest. Add a Minecraft hopper on top leading into it. Using a few temporary blocks and rails, move a hopper minecart so that it's resting safely on top of the normal hopper. This will collect any fish the farm produces and move them down into the storage area.

3) Place the lava

Next, place a sign behind the hopper minecart. Place a piece of glass so you can watch everything, and then add a lava source block above the sign. It should be held in place safely. This lava will break the bobber after it's been bitten by a fish, collecting the item and resetting everything.

4) Place an upper chest and banner

Place down ladders and return to the surface. Place down a chest next to the lava hole, and add a banner so that its bottom half is just above the flames. When using the farm, you'll want to cast your line around the center of the top of the banner.

5) Add walls and waterlog the chest

You'll next want to add walls around the chest, leaving the block behind it empty. Waterlog the chest, and add a second source block into this gap you left. A fish Minecraft mob is going to go in here to help speed up the rates of the farm.

6) Catch and release a fish

That's right, the final thing you'll need to do to actually construct this Minecraft farm is grab a fish using a water bucket and place it safely into this empty block. Once you've done that, you'll need to finish up the walls. This will make sure that the fish doesn't escape.

Add a final ring of slabs around everything. Make sure to also place a slab over the chest. This will stop you from being able to interact with it, making the farm easier to use.

7) Use autoclicker to automate the farm

Unfortunately, simply holding right-click down will cause you to use your fishing rod too quickly. This means that the only way for you to truly AFK this farm is to use a third-party auto clicker. You can set it so that you'll only right-click once every 15 to 20 seconds. This will, on average, be more than enough time for a regular fishing rod.

Make sure to remove about five seconds for every level of the lure Minecraft enchantment on the fishing rod, since that will reduce the time it takes to catch something.
