Many of Minecraft's best resources can be found throughout the terrain, naturally generated in block form as ores. There are a total of nine different ores between the overworld and the Nether. This ranges from the common copper, coal, and quartz ores to rare diamond and emerald ores. Ancient debris, while similar to an ore, is not one, and thus was not counted with the rest of the ores.
Everything that you need to know about each of the game's nine total different ores is detailed below, including their uses and most common Y levels.
All about Minecraft's nine ores
Coal Ore

Most common: 45
Coal is one of the most important materials to mine. It appears only above level zero, meaning that mining in deepslate will never yield it. Coal also generates in large amounts in mountain biomes exposed to air. It is used to cook food, make torches, heat furnaces, and power Minecraft super smelters.
Copper Ore
Most common: 43
Copper ore is one of the most common in the game. It's also found at the same level as coal, making it possible to mine for both at the same time. Copper is primarily a decorative item, as copper blocks fit in wonderfully with Minecraft steampunk builds. However, it can also be used to make lightning rods and spyglasses, making it useful to find early game.
Lapis Lazuli Ore
Most common: -2
Lapis lazuli is a surprisingly hard ore to find. It does not generate very often, even at its most common level. Lapis is also an incredibly important Minecraft ore to hunt for. Minecraft enchanting setups need lapis lazuli to apply enchantments to items. With the fortune III enchantment, a single lapis ore can drop a maximum of 36 ore.
Iron Ore
Most common: -14
Iron is one of the most useful items in the game. It also has quite a large generation range, appearing from -64 to 320, only missing from levels 73 to 79. It's used in the midgame for tools and armor, and in the late game for amazingly handy items like Minecraft hoppers, minecarts, and rails.
Gold Ore
Most common: -18 (Normal), 32 to 256 (Badlands), 114 (Nether)
Gold ore is by far the most interesting in the entire game when it comes to generation. There are two different ranges of gold in the overworld. Badlands biomes have gold in huge amounts. Additionally, gold can also be found as ore within the Nether, making it the only metal that generates naturally there.
Gold is mostly used for piglin bartering or to make powered rails. Armor, tools, and weapons made of gold have nowhere near enough durability to be worth crafting.
Redstone Ore
Most common: -59
Redstone ore starts generating at level 16 and becomes more common going down. Redstone is the only ore that rivals iron in long-term importance, as redstone is needed to make all of Minecraft's best farms. The fortune enchantment is also highly effective for redstone, which drops up to eight dust from a single ore.
Diamond Ore
Most common: -59
Diamond ore is the most exciting ore to stumble onto while mining underneath a Minecraft survival base. Diamond tools, weapons, and armor are the best that you can make without traveling to the Nether. Diamond blocks can also be used to power beacons.
Emerald Ore
Most common: 85
Emerald ore is the rarest Minecraft ore in the overworld. It only generates within the game's mountain biomes. This means that emeralds can only be found in a very small percentage of the world. They are primarily used in villager trading, but they can also be used to power beacons.
Nether Quartz Ore
Most common: 114
The final ore in the game is Nether quartz ore, which is incredibly common all throughout the Nether. This ore drops quite a large amount of XP, making it handy for quickly gaining a few levels. Nether quartz is also needed to make observers, which are one of the most useful redstone components in the entire game.
