Village reputation in Minecraft is affected by a host of features, ranging from your actions to your trades with a certain village. If you help out villagers or engage in trade with them, their respect for you will grow.

Similarly, if you kill villagers, and their children, or even eliminate the iron golem in the village, you will garner a negative reputation. This will have a severe impact on your gameplay and the resources available to you from each village.

Here's a detailed list of how actions can affect your village reputation in Minecraft:

Popularity of Actions
ActionPopularity Change in Bedrock Edition
Curing a zombie villager10

Additionally, gossip is a powerful game mechanic where villagers can store certain memories about players. These memories get spread to other villages and can essentially affect your relationship with other villages in nearby areas and surrounding biomes.

How does gossip affect village reputation in Minecraft

Five major types of gossip can essentially affect a player's reputation with a village. These values add to the reputation you have with a village in Minecraft. However, gossip decays when spreading between villagers and will ultimately reach zero after a point.

Here are the Gossip effects in Minecraft:

TypeCaused byAmount gainedDecayShare penaltyMax valueReputation multiplier
Major positiveCuring2001001005
Minor positiveCuring25152001
Minor negativeAttacking252020200-1
Major negativeKilling251010100-5
TradeTrading2220251

When you engage in activities such as trading or curing a villager, you gain a certain amount of gossip. When a piece of gossip is shared, it receives a lower share and decay value every 20 in-game minutes. This penalty reduces the amount of positive or negative gossip left after every share. Hence, major gossip is not shared and is localized.

Gossip essentially quantifies a player's total village reputation in Minecraft. The total reputation of a player is determined by multiplying each gossip's value by their reputation multiplier and adding the results together.

The village reputation in Minecraft is an important game mechanic that will help you progress quickly. In fact, the price of a villager's trades is directly affected by your in-game reputation. Hence, a positive reputation will reduce the cost of items while a negative reputation will increase them.

Interestingly, your reputation also affects the Iron Golems found in a village. If your reputation is quite low, the Iron Golems will attack you on sight — this works on gossip as well so if your reputation is marginally low in one village, the Iron Golem of another village might attack you. Similarly, if your reputation is positive, the Golems will aid you when you are in danger.
