Minecraft Dungeons is currently available across multiple platforms at a discount to commemorate Minecraft's 15th anniversary, but is it worth buying? While the dungeon-crawling spin-off offers plenty of hours of fun and multiple expansions to traverse, fans may want to pump the brakes on picking it up even at its discounted price. While it may be fun for a while, this game likely isn't worth it in the long term.
Even though every player has their own tastes and commitment levels to games, and even though Minecraft Dungeons' player count is currently surging after its discount, the game hasn't received new content in quite some time and it's highly likely that players will move on once they've exhausted the current lineup of content made available in the spin-off.
Why Minecraft Dungeons likely isn't worth it in the long run

As is expected from the action RPG genre, there's plenty of fun to be had in Minecraft Dungeons. The core gameplay loop of defeating enemies, clearing stages, beating powerful bosses, and upgrading gear can be an addictive one. However, once the grind of improving gear has finished, players may not find too many reasons to continue playing the game.
While Minecraft Dungeons offers six DLC campaigns that broaden the experience and a few Seasonal Challenges to spice things up, Mojang made it clear a few years ago that it is no longer actively working on the game. No new content will be introduced in any form, so once players have reached the limit of the spinoff's offerings, there's not much left to do.
The surge of players at the moment is certainly nice, as Minecraft Dungeons multiplayer can be one of the most entertaining aspects of the game. However, Dungeons' core gameplay loop won't be for everyone, and more than a few players may move on from the game before exhausting the game's content. It might be fun to pillage dungeons for a while, but many players will likely move on.
Moreover, while the game's gameplay is enjoyable, it does feel lacking in other areas. The quest to defeat the Arch-Illager isn't exactly the most thrilling story, and the six DLC expansions don't do much to enrich the overall game lore despite adding more gameplay elements to keep things fresh. The procedurally generated dungeons, while fun, can feel a bit repetitive as well.
Although some players may get plenty of mileage out of the game by traversing through the world at increasingly more challenging difficulty levels, the lack of support from Mojang going forward likely won't capture fans' attention for long. Once players have had their dungeon-delving fill, they may look for other action RPG titles that are still actively in development to get their fix.
This isn't to say that players shouldn't pick up the spinoff at a discounted price and have some fun, but even though it is a cheap game, its lack of forthcoming content and dwindling player base (despite the bump from it going on sale) doesn't bode well in the long run. Fans can have a good time for a while, but Dungeons will likely end up out of your rotation in the interest of other active action RPGs.
