There are different versions of Minecraft for multiple platforms, including PC, Mac, Android, iOS, PlayStation, Nintendo Switch, and Xbox. However, a question that comes to the minds of many players is whether the PlayStation 5 iteration of the game is Bedrock Edition or Java Edition.

Alongside the Xbox S|X, Xbox One, PS4, and Nintendo, the PS5 platform features Minecraft Bedrock Edition. The Pocket version of the game, available for both Android and iOS devices, is also Bedrock. On the other hand, Windows, Mac, and Linux have Java Edition.

Let's take a look at why Mojang Studios has released Minecraft Bedrock Edition for almost every gaming platform and reserved the arguably better Java Edition for only PC, Mac, and Linux.

Why is Minecraft Bedrock Edition everywhere?

Minecraft Bedrock Edition is notoriously buggy. It is filled with countless glitches that negatively affect the gameplay experience. In fact, the prevalence of such issues was one of the reasons why the game did not have a Hardcore mode for a long time.

However, Bedrock Edition is available on most gaming platforms because it is very light and can be run on lower-specced devices. These include as mobile devices (iOS and Android), consoles, and the infamously underpowered Nintendo Switch.

Moreover, not all gaming platforms can run Java Edition, but they all can run Objective C and C++, the language Bedrock Edition is built with.

Some players may wonder: if underpowered devices were the reason Mojang Studios decided to make Bedrock Edition an almost universal version of the game, why haven’t they changed it now? The PlayStation 5 and Xbox S|X are more powerful than most middle-tier PCs. Modern smartphones are also incredibly powerful.

However, since Bedrock Edition is running well, and making a separate game version for other platforms would be a time-consuming and money-exhausting task, the developer has decided to keep things the way it is.

One great thing is that when players buy Minecraft on PC, they get both editions (Mac only has Minecraft Java Edition). This allows them to play with other players who have a console or a mobile device.
