Notch recently took to X to announce that Minecraft 2 could be in the works. After he split from his team at Mojang in 2014, the developer co-founded his game studio called Rubberbrain, which is known as Bitshift Entertainment as of 2024.
Amid the festivities of the new year, Notch dropped a post on New Year's Day wherein he stated that he would be open to creating an entirely new traditional roguelike game or Minecraft 2, a successor to the original game:
When the gaming community went into a frenzy after this post, many users wanted to know if a sequel to the original game was on its way. Notch confirmed that he is open to creating Minecraft 2 following the tremendous success of the first game:
Notch's original post hinting at the possibility of Minecraft 2 has already crossed over three million reads and hundreds of comments from excited fans. The concept, which he currently calls Adventureland, will follow in the footsteps of the original game but with a twist. In one of his replies, he stated it would also contain features from his current rogue project.
This prompted the active gaming community to pitch a host of ideas, which were surprisingly entertained by him. A user even went as far as pitching for the next installment in space. Notch replied that he would be open to it if the consensus leaned in its favor.
He even teased that it might have steampunk elements and themes since it was a majorly-requested feature. Despite uncertainty over the theme of this installment, he confirmed that the game would feature lots of trees since they were his favorite. He suggested that he would create a game that the audience might enjoy, stating that he would also provide early access if it happened.
Many users wondered if Notch would consider coming back to Microsoft to make the game, to which he responded that he was "absolutely willing" to the idea:
It comes as no surprise that the entire gaming community will be excited at the prospect of receiving a sequel to the beloved sandbox title decades after it was first released in 2009. Minecraft 2's idea has received overwhelming support from the community, making them eagerly await the arrival of what comes next and wonder when the game could see the light of day.

When could Minecraft 2 be released?
Notch has not given any concrete timeline as to when the next installment of the popular sandbox could be released. However, since the original game took about two years to reach completion after its first public release, players can expect a similar timeline for this sequel.
Notch further stated that if he ends up making this next installment, he would keep players and the community updated about the developments. He even suggested that he could livestream the dev process, similar to his videos back in 2010 and 2011.
