The debug stick in Minecraft is a unique item that is exclusive to the title's Java Edition. While most players enjoy the simple survival or hardcore mode, some would want to use the creative mode to build huge structures or tinker with game mechanics and internal commands. One way to do these game mechanic tweaks and changes is through a special stick called the debug stick.
Here is everything to know about the debug stick in Minecraft Java Edition.

Players should note that the debug stick can only be obtained in Minecraft's Java Edition and not the Bedrock Edition.
To get the debug stick, players will need to allow commands in a Minecraft world, since it is an item that is not present in the creative mode inventory as well. That said, if players want to use the stick to any effect, the world should be in creative mode. This is because the game considers the stick a cheat tool, rendering it non-functional in the adventure or survival mode.
Once players are in a creative mode world with commands on, they can simply type the '/give' command, type their username, and then write minecraft:debug_stick. The stick will now automatically pop up in the list of items, and players can hit enter to obtain it.
How to use the debug stick
The debug stick is a special item that players use to edit block states. Block states are sets of data that define how a block looks or behaves in the game.
The simplest example of this is growing crops in Minecraft. Each time a crop grows by one phase, its overall block state changes. This change in block state can be read by observers. The debug stick allows players to change these block states.
The moment players obtain the debug stick, they will notice how it looks exactly like a regular stick, but with an enchantment glint. They can simply right-click on any block with the stick in hand to start cycling through various block states. When the stick is used on any block, a message pops up on top of the hot bar, showing the stick's effect on the block.
If players use the stick on a wooden log, for example, it will change direction. Doors and trapdoors that can be placed in several directions can also be changed. As shown above, even the direction of the Nether portal's purple interface can be rotated using the debug stick.
In this way, players can play around with the block states of every single block in Minecraft using the debug stick.
