After Mojang announced that Minecraft Dungeons would no longer receive new content or support back in 2023, many players assumed the game was on its last legs. However, the Minecraft 15th anniversary has heralded a 50% off sale for the game on multiple platforms, and as one might expect, the overall active player count is beginning to increase from a few hundred players to a few thousand.
According to metrics provided by SteamDB, in the days leading up to Minecraft's 15th anniversary earlier in May 2024, only roughly 180-400 players were actively playing Minecraft Dungeons per day. However, since the discount, the Dungeons player count has increased to roughly 2,600 per day on average, with a recent peak of over 4,000 players.
While fans of the dungeon-crawling Minecraft spinoff likely welcome this news, it's unclear as to whether this bump in activity will last.

Minecraft Dungeons' increased popularity is likely only temporary
While it's great to hear that Minecraft Dungeons is receiving new life thanks to its discount, it would be preemptive to say that this bump in player count is meant to last. Many games on Steam and elsewhere regularly receive an influx of players after receiving a discount only to level back off to previous player counts after a few days or weeks, and there are factors at play that may support this.
One of the biggest signs that Minecraft Dungeons' increase in player count is likely temporary is the fact that the game is no longer actively supported by Mojang. In Summer 2023, the Minecraft developers made a statement that the spinoff title would no longer receive new content. With that in mind, there's only so much that new players can do before they hit the limit of the game's offerings.
Moreover, while the multiplayer should be a bit more enjoyable for some time, it's hard to think that every new player in Minecraft Dungeons will stick around in the long run. Eventually, more than a few fans will move on to other games, and multiplayer will become more difficult to establish unless players enjoy the game together in pre-built co-op teams, which may lead to further player count decline.
While Minecraft Dungeons can be entertaining, the fact of the matter is that it doesn't figure into Mojang's future plans. Games without active support are rarely able to maintain a healthy player base, and the reality is that Dungeons has entered this phase of its existence. With no new content on the way, fans will ultimately not have much to look forward to.
Barring some surprise announcement from Mojang on the future of Dungeons, the game simply doesn't have much of a future. A few hundred dedicated fans may continue to hold the torch for the game, but unless Mojang announces a sequel or a new slew of expansions, the thousands of new players will likely move on after sampling what the game offers at various stages.
It's unfortunate for a spinoff that once held much promise alongside the original game, but with Mojang placing the game on the back burner, it's highly likely that the influx of new players will enjoy the game for a while and then move to other pastures.
