Mojang Studios recently released a hilarious yet informative video about how they developed the new mace weapon for Minecraft 1.21. The mace is a hammer-like weapon that can deal a lot of damage with a unique mechanic of its own. Since the developers rarely release new weapons to the game, this was one of the highlights of the new update.

Mojang Studios explains how they created mace for the Minecraft 1.21 update

An animated Minecraft video hosted by two characters named Narrator and M.A.R.I.L.L.A who explained how the developers observed the need for a new weapon in the sandbox game.

They talked about how players even used various tools like pickaxes and axes to kill mobs as well as use them for their intended work. Through this observation, they concluded that players still need new kinds of weapons to hunt down entities in the game.

Next, the presenters in the video explained how the developers decided to give the mace a unique mechanic that would intrigue the player base even more. As a result, they added the damage mechanic that increased the damage dealt based on the height that players fell from as they performed a smash attack.

Since this smash attack mechanic could have made the mace overpowered, they also added a risk/reward mechanic. If the players fail to perform a smash attack after falling from a massive height, the game will trigger the fall damage mechanic and the player will get hurt. In some cases, they can even die from the fall damage.

Next, Mojang Studios wanted to make the mace harder to obtain in Minecraft 1.21. Hence, they first introduced its crafting ingredients, breeze rods and heavy core. They made the new breeze mob drop breeze rods while making heavy core a rare loot item from ominous trial vaults. Ominous trials are a challenge that players need to face in the trial chambers to have a small chance of getting the heavy core.

Lastly, the developers made sure that the old weapons and tools still had a place in Minecraft after adding the mace. Hence, they focused on what the new weapon does best in a certain scenario only. This way, they made sure that swords, tridents, and even bows had their respective places and importance in the game.
