Almost all of the changes Mojang revealed for the upcoming Minecraft Tricky Trials update have been accepted wholeheartedly by the community, but there is one change that didn't receive a warm welcome at all. This change was an update to the iconic mechanical sounds of pistons, making them quieter but also less clear and murkier.
And as expected, the community has almost unanimously rejected this updated sound. There have been dozens of Minecraft datapacks released reverting the change, or, as is the case with u/Wonkatoad on Reddit, making the original sound even louder in protest.

The post refers to the change as an "enhanced" version of the piston's sound, and in one way, it genuinely is. As pointed out by Wonkatoad in a comment left under their post, the reason they made the sounds louder was to enhance and emphasize their mechanical nature, which is what made the original sound so iconic.
Wonkatoad also shared a link to the datapack for players curious about just how much louder these piston sounds are in game. Caution is recommended for anyone using it, though, as prolonged exposure to loud noises, even through headphones, can cause permanent hearing damage.
There are several comments that actually reinforce why the industrial nature of piston sounds is necessary to highlight and a benefit to builders. These comments point out that the new piston sounds, also featured in the post's video, sound weaker, less powerful, and ultimately less satisfying and mechanical.
This solves the main issue, the noise level of pistons, but in a way that makes the situation worse for having been solved.
There were also a few comments pointing out the fact that Mojang didn't even need to change the piston's sound effect. The complaint the community had was that pistons were too loud, making them annoying to use in large numbers. All Mojang needed to do was make the sound quieter by default or add a volume slider exclusively for piston sounds.
The criticisms and feedback have been so loud, in fact, that even Mojang staff are acknowledging it. The developer gnembon tweeted out a picture of an updated crafting recipe for Minecraft's piston, featuring a fish as part of the recipe in reference to the new sound.
Common uses of Minecraft pistons
While it might seem like the new, worse piston sound is only an issue for technical players, pistons are useful in all sorts of builds and projects that are handy even for casual players.
For example, Minecraft piston doors are often the best way to automate entering and exiting a base. Pistons are also used in a large number of the game's most advanced farms to break items, move blocks, and for several other niche applications.
