Minecraft fans want Mojang to let go of this one annoying enchanting feature

Minecraft players often grind for experience points to enchant and repair their favorite gear and there is one feature that stops them from doing so. The "Too Expensive" message that appears when using an anvil for enchanting or repairing items essentially blocks players from completing an action if it requires more than 40 experience levels.

This Minecraft feature has left many wondering why this restriction exists in the first place. A Reddit post by u/Unfair_Development52 brought this issue back into the spotlight. Titled “All in favor of disbanding the 'Too Expensive!' function, say, Aye,” the post resonated with a large portion of the Minecraft community.

Players who spent hours collecting rare enchantments and grinding XP felt that hitting the "Too Expensive" wall was a major setback. They argued that if they were willing to put in the work to gather enough XP, they should be able to perform the upgrades they wanted, regardless of the cost level.

u/warlordcs expressed discontent with this feature, saying they didn’t care how many levels it cost and that it should not be locked. This sentiment captures the feelings of players who believe the game’s mechanics should reward effort, not restrict it.

Another user, u/CreeperAsh07, suggested a more drastic change. They wanted the whole enchanting system should be overhauled. u/UsefulFlamingo9922 suggested that Mojang could introduce a magic-themed update to revamp both enchantments and potions.

This idea drew mixed reactions from fans with some hoping for more in-depth magical mechanics in the game expanding beyond enchantments and potions.

u/lucasthech pointed out that enchantments and potions can’t be categorized as magic which is a fair assessment. It highlights the need for a clearer thematic direction for enchantments if Mojang decides to revamp these features.

Before we can understand the "Too Expensive" issue, we should know how anvils function in Minecraft. Anvils are utility blocks that allow players to rename items, combine enchantments, and repair gear without losing existing enchantments. Using an anvil comes at a cost: XP levels and materials.

Players can combine two similar items or use specific materials like diamonds for diamond tools to repair gear. This system might allow for flexibility, but it also comes with a few limitations.

They are gravity-affected which means they will fall if unsupported, and have limited durability. Over time, anvils degrade into chipped and damaged variants before eventually breaking.

The "Too Expensive!" restriction often prevents players from making the most of their resources and the overwhelming response to u/Unfair_Development52’s Reddit post demonstrates that many players are tired of the limitation.
