Some of the most popular Minecraft mods of all time are based on technology. These usually add a huge swath of content to later stages of the game, ranging from new ores to large machines and even new types of power to go alongside redstone. One of the most famous and beloved of these tech mods is Immersive Engineering, which first started development all the way back in 2015.

Everything you need to know about Immersive Engineering, from the mod's major features to how to install it, can be found detailed below.

  • Modloader(s): Forge, NeoForge
  • Latest Version: 1.20.4

Immersive Engineering is a Minecraft mod focused on technology. However, instead of leaning into modern or regular sci-fi, it instead focuses on realism and the retro-futurism aesthetic. Creator BluSunrize lists aesthetic inspirations such as BioShock, Order 1886, SkyCaptain, and the World of Tomorrow as a frame of reference.

The mod adds many new typers of Minecraft ores, each useful in different areas of engineering and machinery. There is also a new villager type to trade with, new crops, and several new workstations. Rather than tiny single-block workstations, Immersive Engineering instead features multiblock behemoths to work with, such as the 5x3x3 block crusher and the 3x7x8 block excavator.

How to install Immersive Engineering for Minecraft

1) Install a modloader

You'll need to install either Minecraft Forge or NeoForge before you can play the game with Immersive Engineering. Forge is the more popular of the two and has more mods available for it, but the choice comes down to your preference. Make sure to install the modloader for a version of the game that Immersive Engineering has released for, as it does not yet have a 1.21 version.

2) Download the mod

Once you've installed Forge or NeoForge, you'll need to actually get the mod. The safest website to download it from is CurseForge, using the link provided above. Make sure to download the right version of the mod for the modloader you just installed.

3) Open the game's files

Once you've downloaded Immersive Engineering, you'll need to get to the game's files to install it. The easiest way to do this is to launch the game and navigate to Minecraft's resource pack list. The "Open Pack Folder" button near the bottom of the screen will open the list of installed texture packs. You can navigate up from this folder to reach the game's main files.

Make sure to close the game before actually editing or moving files. Doing so while the game is open could cause data corruption or errors in the future.

4) Install Immersive Engineering

From here, navigate into the "mods" folder. If this folder does not exist, you'll need to make it. Make sure to not use any capital letters when naming the folder, as the game is expecting a particular name. Move Immersive Engineering's jar file into this folder to install it. Then, launch back into the game and get to working on a workshop or steampunk factory build to fit the mod's new features.
