The Minecraft Mob Vote pits three or four mobs against each other, leaving fans to decide which one gets added to the game. This has caused quite a few controversies in the Minecraft community as there are times when people want more than one mob added to the game, but are forced to make a choice. However, this wasn't always the case, and there is an interesting history behind this voting event.

This article explores the history of the event, from the first to the last one, now that Mojang Studios has officially announced the retirement of Mob Vote.

The Mob Vote event was first held in 2017 at Minecon Earth. There were four mobs to choose from: Barnacle, Wildfire, Great Hunger, and the familiar Phantom. Naturally, fans were inclined to vote for the Phantom, as there were no flying mobs in the game at that time.

In 2018, there was another Mob Vote event but only for the Chinese edition of the title. For those who do not know, there is a Chinese edition of Minecraft that exists solely in China. The panda won the mob vote against a host of interesting mobs such as the pink dolphin, crocodile, deer, and even the golden monkey.

In 2018 and 2019, the global edition of Minecraft had the biome vote instead of the mob vote. But from 2020 to 2023, we got four consecutive Mob Vote events adding new creatures to the game.

In 2020, three mobs would compete to become a part of the game: the mooblooms, the hostile Iceologers, and the glow squids native to the ocean. While the glow squids won this vote and were added to the game, it is quite unfortunate that the losing mobs were completely lost in oblivion.

Moving on to 2021, we got the allay mob instead of the much-needed copper golem and the glare. The glare was an interesting, ghost-like mob that would have helped the player avoid dark areas, while a copper golem would made the copper blocks more useful.

Similarly, in 2022, fans were given three options, namely the tuff golem, the rascal, and the sniffer. The sniffer won the vote and was added to the game, even though it does not have a specific purpose in the game.

Finally, the last Mob Vote event was held in 2023 and the options included the penguin, the crab, and the armadillo. It was the armadillo that won the vote and was added to the game. This vote was favorable for the community as the armadillo is arguably the most useful one since it drops scutes that can be used to make the wolf armor.

The Mob Vote has since been retired which means that the developers will have to find a new way to add mobs to the game. Although this decision can swing either way, we hope Mojang will pay heed to fan opinion before adding any new mobs.
