Although Minecraft 1.21's Potions of Infestation didn't seem all that useful at first, fans found a way to put them to good use. Through a clip, Redditor u/EpicGamer3786 shared a way to afflict iron golems with the Infested effect through the use of splash potions, hurting them to spawn silverfish, then killing the silverfish with Splash Potions of Harming.

Although the video was a bit choppy due to the sizable quantity of silverfish mobs being killed (and the health bar/damage number add-ons on-screen), the basic premise was intriguing. Because iron golems have a large health pool, they can be hit to spawn silverfish multiple times before they die. Players can then easily use Splash Potions of Harming to defeat the silverfish and collect their XP drops.

In the comments, Minecraft fans provided some recommendations to improve the XP farm design, specifically by using the allay mob. This is because this entity can regenerate quickly over time and be harmed by things like campfire blocks. They can be afflicted with the Infested status effect and continuously spawn silverfish without dying, allowing for a near-infinite repository of XP to collect.

Although Minecraft offers more efficient ways to farm XP — something that EpicGamer3786 conceded — Splash Potions of Infestation are certainly worth keeping in mind as a way to pick up some extra experience points. Silverfish may only drop five XP when killed by a player or tamed wolf, but those small gains add up when countless silverfish are spawning at once.

Several players in the comments also suggested that Splash Potions of Oozing should be implemented into the XP farm design as well. This is because it allows killed mobs to spawn slimes. These potions can be a great way not only to collect experience points but also slime balls that can be useful in a wide variety of builds.

All in all, the 1.21 update's new status effects and their accompanying potions have proven to be quite helpful, much more than initially expected. More applications involving these are likely to come to light in the coming days and weeks as players continue their experiments.

The prospect of spawning silverfish upon injuring a mob didn't seem like much when the Minecraft 1.21 update was first released. This left some to believe Potions of Infestation were pretty pointless. However, fans always find a way to utilize such mechanics wisely.

While the community recognized that some items and blocks simply lack any conventional uses worth mentioning, Potions of Infestation aren't among them. Even though other sources of XP are better long-term for farming, these should prove to be useful for early or mid-game players who need a little extra experience for their enchanting or repairing needs.

They can always move on to things like enderman farms at a later point, but Potions of Infestation and the right mob farm can go a long way when it comes to a gamer's early adventures.
