Minecraft has countless different blocks and items that players can use to survive the challenging blocky world filled with hostile mobs. But perhaps the worst thing any player has to face in the game is being stuck in a difficult area, such as a cave or a jungle with the sun going down. The combination of darkness and hostile mobs is one of the worst in the game. This is why players always carry a light source with them, mostly a torch, as it is the cheapest and easiest to make. But not all players use this light source.
A Minecraft player and Reddit user by the name Baqfy asked the game’s community what their go-to light source was when they were building something. The user also posted an image showing all the various light sources that are available. Some of these light sources are quite expensive to make, while others can only be obtained after progressing in the game.
User PotatoesAndChill wrote that they like to use torches, adding that they place the torches in the most random place they can. This is something many players do since torches are a dime a dozen and do the job very well. Another user named CodMaleficent3990 wrote that PotatoesAndChill was truly an original Minecraft player.

A user named Hailand_ mentioned that while they prefer using the light block, it is not available in survival mode. However, if they build in creative mode, the light block is what they go for. For survival mode, it might depend on the build but most of the time, it is the torch they reach for. Another user named Nick_TheGuy asked what a “light block” was and whether it was a Bedrock Edition thing.
User DoggusuvHarem explained that the light block is an invisible source of light that can be obtained on both the Java and Bedrock editions using commands or by switching to creative mode.
Another user named Mr_Obsidian_13 said that they are not a good builder and mentioned that the light source depends on the type of build. For underwater builds, they use sea lanterns, and if it is a basic house, they go for glow stones and torches. User JoloNaKarjolo said that they use lanterns with stone bricks, dirt, coarse dirt, etc which gives them a rundown or medieval aesthetic.
Minecraft Tricky Trials adds a new light source
With the release of the Tricky Trials update, Mojang Studios has added a new light source to the game. This was a much-needed move, as there was a lot of copper in the game, but it barely had any use. The new light source, Copper bulbs, is quite interesting as they are relatively cheaper to make and have great aesthetic appeal as well.
But the best part is that their luminosity decreases over time and players need to polish the copper bulbs to make it bright again. This adds an interactive aspect to the game and makes it more immersive.
