Minecraft redstone torches are getting a new look, and players are divided over it

Minecraft has gotten a ton of updates in the past few months, but it seems Mojang is not done improving the game. The developer has just released the 24w33a snapshot, which introduces a lot of exciting experimental features related to redstone, minecarts, and the much-awaited bundles.

A Reddit user named Carojammer recently took to the Minecraft subreddit to share an image of redstone torches. They highlighted how different the items look in the original game and how they would look if the changes in the snapshot are finalized. Despite both having the same red glow, the updated texture looks much better and more refined.

The original poster then asked the community about their opinions on this redesign:

“Do you guys think it would've looked better if it had different colors? I changed the colors a bit. I need people's most honest opinion.”

In response, Redditor Blank_blank2139 said they never realized the old redstone torches looked like regular torches with a hint of red glow. They added that the new variant looks much better.

Another user named woalk jokingly said the new redstone torch is technically still the same, but now, the red glow is in 3D.

Redditor Unit88 expressed uncertainty about whether they favor the old version for its superior appearance or simply because they're accustomed to it.

In contrast, user Whole_Instance_4276 pointed out that the old variant is essentially just a torch surrounded by some red 2D pixels. Meanwhile, user trebuchet_ noted that the new version has the same concept, but now, the red elements are rendered in 3D.

With players debating exactly what Mojang has changed, the clearest explanation is that the old redstone torch resembles a standard torch with red flames. Meanwhile, the new design looks like the same torch but is covered with a layer of reddish gello, resembling a red translucent matchstick.

Redditor Uncommonality said they love the new redstone torch as it looks “more mechanical” like a lightbulb encased in glass. However, user LittiKodo disagreed, stating that this is precisely why they dislike it, as it lacks the loose flame at the tip.

User BKO2 chimed in, arguing that having a flame on the redstone torch never made sense and has always bothered them.

Minecraft fans have been asking Mojang to focus less on adding new features to the game and rather on improving existing ones. And it seems that the studio has heard this feedback loud and clear.

With the minecart improvements, the addition of bundles, and the polishing of redstone items in Minecraft snapshot 24w33a, the game is moving in the right direction. Hopefully, the next major update, 1.22, focuses on making the End dimension better.
