Minecraft has been around for more than 15 years and has not only managed to stay relevant but also maintained an increase in popularity. The iconic blocky world of the game and the mobs in it have become synonymous with gaming. But another aspect of the game that can be easily recognized is its sound. The sound each mob makes has stayed astoundingly relevant in pop culture.

This leads to a question; how do the folks at Mojang Studios come up with these sounds? Well, it is no longer a mystery. The official Minecraft YouTube channel released an interesting video showing how developers come up with unique mob sounds. Here’s everything there is to know about mob sounds in Minecraft.

The most surprising thing about the video was that almost all the mob sounds were made by just one person. Samuel Åberg, who is the audio director at Mojang Studios, created the sounds of the mobs using his own voice with some tweaks. The gurgling sound of the villagers, the aggressive sniffing sounds of the sniffers, the heavy roar of the piglins, and even the angry sounds of the pillagers. Almost everything in Minecraft is voiced by Åberg.

Another interesting aspect that the video showed was how the sounds of the cats were made. Samuel Åberg’s cat, named Odi, has given its voice to the sounds of the in-game cats. Not just the sounds of the mobs, Samuel Åberg has also composed the track “Five” which was added to the game with The Wild Update.

The video dives deeper into the entire creative process of how Åberg comes up with creative ways to record different in-game sounds. For example, the sound of putting items on the frame or taking it off comes from a simple silicone hair brush while the sound of an arrow hitting something comes from the rattling of a chair.

Perhaps this is the reason why Mojang Studios still has not added an ambiance update to the game with the sounds of forests and insects to make the game more immersive. I mean, how much can one person do?

It would be interesting to see what the 1.22 update adds to the game and how new game sounds will be recorded. Since fans are expecting the next major update to focus on the End dimension, if Mojang Studios adds new mobs in this dimension, their sounds would certainly be even more interesting.
