There are countless Minecraft horror mods inspired by the classic viral cave dweller. One of the most popular of these horror mods is The One Who Watches, created by Pixel_Coder. This mod shares plenty of concepts and features with the cave dweller, but has more than enough standout aspects to make it worth considering for a horror modpack.

Everything you need to know about The One Who Watches, from the mods main features to how to install it, and more, can be found detailed below.

As previously mentioned, The One Who Watches is heavily inspired by the cave dweller mod. This mod adds a mod known, fittingly enough, as The One Who Watches. This mob will sometimes spawn at night and will attempt to get close to you if it sees you. If it gets too close, it will begin to scream quite loudly and chase after the player, dealing considerable damage to those it manages to catch.

Unlike the cave dweller, who, as the name suggests, appeared primarily in caves, The One Who Watches is much more common on the surface. While it can spawn underground in caves, that's exceedingly rare. This is most likely due to the size of the mob, as it's quite tall, and for balance reasons, as it would be very frustrating to get randomly killed by a high-damage jumpscare mob in a cave.

The installation process for The One Who Watches

1) Open CurseForge

The first step with The One Who Watches is to open up the CurseForge alternate Minecraft launcher. The mod is officially hosted here. You can also use any other modded launcher that is able to pull mods from CurseForge, such as Prism Launcher or ATLauncher.

2) Search for "Who Watches"

Next, you'll want to use the search bar located at the top of CurseForge to search for "Who Watches." Strangely, using the full name of the mod presents less useful results, while only using "Who Watches" will return the mod as the second option.

3) Create a new profile or add to an existing one

Once you've found the mod, hit the orange "Install" button on it. You'll then be prompted to either add the mod to a preexisting Minecraft modpack or create a new one for it. Select whichever one works best for you. Using a new profile is the best way to keep the game as stable as possible.

4) Add other optional features

This is the perfect time to add any resource packs, Minecraft shaders, or other mods to the installation. For example, other horror mods will make the game even scarier, while moody shaders like Spooklementary will help accentuate the terrifying atmosphere.

5) Play the game

Now that you've got all your additional content installed, hit the "Play" button to launch the modded game. Then start up a new Minecraft survival world and prepare for what horrors await come the setting sun.

Other mod information

Note that the description page on CurseForge includes a comment from the developer that the mod shouldn't be loud enough to damage one's hearing but is still incredibly loud. Needless to say, such a warning should be taken seriously.

Make sure to lower your volume a bit before starting. The One Who Watches is a great Minecraft horror mod due to how effective it is at making players jump, but the extremely loud noises can become overbearing eventually.
