For as fun as Minecraft's survival is, it's inarguably not very complex. The only resource you really need to contend with is hunger. Even health doesn't really matter, as having full hunger will allow you to heal. This ends up making the survival part of the game feel very easy past the first few days of a new world. Thankfully, the Tough as Nails mod steps in to make survival more realistic.

Everything you need to know about how Tough as Nails improves survival, as well as how to install the mod, can be found detailed below.

The Tough as Nails Minecraft mod adds two seemingly simple features that totally revamp how you'll need to think about the world to survive: temperature and thirst. These two changes end up making your character feel much more alive and realistic, as you need to account for different environments, like you would in the real world.

Having to account for temperature means that you will need to avoid prolonged trips into warm Minecraft biomes like deserts; otherwise, you'll overheat and die. The same can be said for colder regions, which will cause you to slowly freeze to death without proper insulation.

This mod also makes visiting the Nether much harder than it already is, as it's insanely warm. You'll almost immediately start overheating due to just how warm the dimension is.

Other factors also influence body temperature, such as armor, activity level, and even the time of day. Thankfully, there are a number of items, including new armor types, blocks, and even Minecraft potions, that make players less susceptible to their environments.

A new thirst bar to keep high also means that you'll need to live somewhere near a source of water, or add one to your Minecraft survival base. You can drink things like water bottles and milk from vanilla that make sense to be consumed. However, there are also new liquids to help make the game feel more realistic, such as fruit and vegetable juices.

Steps to install Tough as Nails

1) Open a mod launcher

The first thing you'll need to do to install Tough as Nails is open either CurseForge or Modrinth. Thankfully, Tough as Nails has a page on both of these alternative Minecraft launchers, so you'll be able to use what you prefer between them, as well as any other launcher able to pull mods from them.

2) Find Tough as Nails

You'll next need to use the search bar located within the launcher you selected to search for "Tough as Nails."

On CurseForge, this bar is at the top of the screen. On Modrinth, there's a magnifying glass on the left-hand side of the screen that will take you to the content browser.

3) Install the mod

Once you've located Tough as Nails within your launcher, you'll need to hit the "Install" button to actually get the mod. The process is very similar on both CurseForge and Modrinth.

There should be an install button to the right of the mod's name, and once you hit it, you'll be prompted to either add the mod to an existing Minecraft modpack or create a new profile for it. You can do either of these, depending on what works best for you.

The mod requires Fabric API if you're using the Fabric modloader and will also require GlitchCore on versions newer than 1.20.4. Make sure to install these if they were not automatically installed by your launcher.

4) Get started surviving

Once the mod has finished installing, all you'll need to do is start up the game and create a new Minecraft survival world. It should be very easy to tell if the mod is working properly, as there will be a new thirst bar and a temperature meter added to the hud and hotbar area.
