Minecraft has various blocks that act as storage for players to keep items. One of the most simple storage blocks that is frequently made is the chest. Almost every player uses chests in one way or another. However, it has another variant that players often use without realizing it's a different feature set: trapped chest.

Here is everything to know about trapped chests in Minecraft, including its crafting recipe and special use that is different from regular chests.

Crafting a trapped chest is quite simple since it only requires common items. First, players must create a triphook wire, one of the two crafting ingredients for the block. Triphook wire can be made using one iron ingot, one stick, and one plank.

Once made, the item must be combined with a regular chest to craft the trapped chest. Apart from being manually crafted, trapped chests can be found naturally generated in fake-end portal rooms in Woodland Mansions.

How to use a trapped chest in Minecraft

A trapped chest in Minecraft has more features than a regular chest and can be used in two ways: to simply store items or as a redstone block. While it can still store items normally, it can also activate other redstone blocks like redstone lamps, comparators, repeaters, observers, and more.

Whenever a player opens a trapped chest, the block will send a redstone signal to its adjacent block. The power of the redstone signal is determined by the number of players accessing that trapped chest at once. For example, if 15 players access it at the same time, it will give out 15 redstone signal units.

If only one player accesses a trapped chest, it can either activate any redstone block adjacent to it or one block away but connected with a redstone dust. The moment a redstone block is two blocks away from the trapped chest and is connected with two redstone dust, two players will be required to activate it.

The power of the trapped chest can be increased when a redstone repeater is placed adjacent to it but facing away from it. Even one redstone signal unit can be converted into 15 with a repeater.

Trapped chest for a TNT trap

The trapped chest can also be used to activate a TNT block. With this mechanic, players can create a trap for other players on a multiplayer server.

Players can place a TNT block underneath the ground and cover it with one block. A trapped chest can be placed on top of the block. Since the trapped chest can send a redstone signal through one solid block, it can activate the TNT whenever it is being accessed by a player.

If a player approaches the trapped chest and opens it, the TNT will activate and blow up, creating a massive crater in the ground and dealing massive amounts of damage. It is worth mentioning that this will only work on players since trapped chests do not activate when mobs interact with them.
