New Minecraft AI gameplay sparks hilarious memes on X

Minecraft players are having a blast playing Oasis. This is a fully AI-generated version of the game, collaborated by Etched and Decart AI. However, the issue faced by fans is that “Oasis” is not an original game but a version of Mojang's title that isn't performing quite well. The developers very likely used all the gameplay videos of Mojang Studio’s hit title to train the AI.

Oasis AI generated frames of the game based on the player's input. This works much like how generative AI like Dall-E or Midjourney creates images based on the prompt. However, due to the infancy of generative AI for interactive games, AI Minecraft has now become a meme fest on X.

wiintahX shared a short video clip with a caption stating that this AI version of the blocky game has dementia. The video shows the player putting some fences around. Everything looks normal until they turn around and find a whole structure made of wooden fences that were not there before.

The most bizarre clip by far was shared by phr3tt. Over two minutes long, the video shows bizarre generations during the gameplay. Sometimes, the mobs would just morph into a glob of mass. Sheep would just walk around with a head or legs. It seemed that everything around the player was melting. The entire video looked less like a Minecraft playthrough and more like a fever dream.

MegaChanRevival summarized the whole situation with their meme. The video showed a bizarre data mosh with no recognizable shape or structure. The caption of the video was a rhetorical question of how this is what AI-generated Minecraft is.

Players can try out the AI-generated version of the blocky game on the official website of Oasis. Note that it can only run on the desktop version of Google Chrome browser. At the time of writing, it is not supported on other browsers such as Firefox or Safari. Players need to use the on-screen input buttons as the game is not running on an engine.

Gamers need not worry as this is merely a tech demo for the capabilities of generative AI. Nobody would want to play Minecraft that has “dementia.” A game engine creates a world that can be explored. Generative AI does not create the world. Rather, it just makes the next expected frame based on the input from the player. This is why nothing makes sense in this AI-generated game.
