The Minecraft 1.20 Trails & Tales update does not yet have an official release date. With that in mind, the release is impending. Mojang initially stated that it would come in 2023, which means, at most, the community will be waiting about six and a half more months for it to arrive. It's likely to be released earlier than that, as they have entered the pre-release stage already.
Nevertheless, whether it's six months from now or six weeks, it's always a good idea to prepare for the major changes that are headed this way. Here's what you can do to accomplish that.
What to do in preparation for Minecraft Trails & Tales
To prepare for the update, you should first ensure all your worlds are backed up. It's unclear yet how existing worlds will be affected by the new update.

For example, when the 1.18 update came out, mountains went higher than the previous build limit, and caves could go down an entire chunk earlier. Anything preexisting couldn't be changed to that, which may happen in the 1.20 update.
On the other hand, the worlds might be changed. Not every update is beloved by all, so it's a good idea to back up any 1.19 or earlier Minecraft worlds to ensure they remain as they were, just in case.
Another thing you can do to prepare is try out a new seed you've been thinking about. If you were considering trying a new seed that supposedly has a great spawn, now is the time to do it.
Seeds change with updates, and the update alters each world, so it won't be the exact same world you found when you discovered the seed. Try it now before it's too late.
It is also a good idea to try exploring Ancient Cities and Mangrove Swamps. With more biomes and structures coming in the 1.20 Minecraft update, the most recent additions in those categories automatically get a little more uncommon.
Additionally, if possible, it's a good idea to test out the beta/preview, snapshot, or pre-release. These have most of the aspects of the 1.20 update available, which is a good way to find out just what to expect.
If you want to be surprised by everything Mojang has implemented, do not engage in betas or snapshots. However, if you want to know what Suspicious Sand is like or what the Cherry Blossom Biome looks like, check those out.
Be sure to catch up on any reading, such as official patch notes or release information, to discover everything coming. The Sniffer, Bamboo wood, Cherry Blossoms, and more get the headlines, but that only scratches the surface of what's being added to Minecraft next.
