Markus Persson aka Notch, is known as the creator and founder of Minecraft, one of the most popular sandbox titles of all time. After his split from the Mojang team in 2014, he co-founded a game studio called Rubberbrain, which is currently known as Bitshift Entertainment.

Amid the festivities of the new year, Notch just dropped a cryptic hint that teases a potential new game, causing the community to go crazy:

Notch went on to put a poll where he asked players to choose between two concept ideas — either a traditional roguelike game or Minecraft 2, a successor to the original game. While many players voted for a sequel, some also asked if Notch would consider returning to and working with Microsoft. The developer stated that he was willing to do so:

Another user pointed out that most people would want Minecraft 2. However, they also reminisced about how people did not know they needed the original game, but it turned out to be a game-changer:

Notch's original post has already crossed millions of reads and thousands of comments from excited fans are flooding in. The game, which he currently calls Adventureland, promises to follow in the footsteps of the original but with a twist.

When a user asked if he would be making the new game as is, Notch hinted that he would take a very different creative vision for the next installment and make something that the audience will enjoy:

When a user pitched an idea for the next installment in space, Notch did not shoot it down. Rather, he suggested that he would be open to it if the consensus leaned in its favor. He further stated that the game might have a steampunk element since many players had requested it. That said, he confirmed that whatever the version, the game will feature lots of trees since they were his favorite:

He further went on to state that the new game would be made in a unique way so that it does not infringe upon the original game and its popularity:

Oh and I also very much value being a man of my word, so I also intend to do this in a way that in no way tried to sneakily infringe on the incredible work the Mojang team is doing

It comes as no surprise that players are massively excited at the prospect of receiving a sequel to the beloved sandbox title 15 years after it was first released. The idea of a second installment has received overwhelming support from the community and they eagerly await the arrival of what comes next.

While Notch has not put out a timeline, Minecraft 2 could take a few years to make. Since the original game took close to two years to reach a complete structure after the initial version was made public, eager players will have to wait a while for the new one as well.

Notch has stated that if the project does take off, he will provide timely updates regarding the status of the development to ensure fans are apprised of the development of Minecraft 2.
