Mojang announces new SpongeBob addon for Minecraft Bedrock

Minecraft has often released collaborations with beloved franchises as downloadable content, and the latest to be announced is returning to one particular IP. On July 14, Mojang announced an all-new Bedrock Edition addon known simply as the SpongeBob Addon, the latest entry in a long-running partnership between Nickelodeon and Mojang/Microsoft.

It should be noted that while it has been announced, this new Minecraft x SpongeBob Squarepants addon won't be released until August 20, 2024, and only via the marketplace on Bedrock Edition. Still, it doesn't hurt to examine what we know so far about this upcoming Minecraft addon and how it works in players' worlds.

What to know about Minecraft Bedrock's new SpongeBob addon

Not much is known about this new Minecraft x SpongeBob Squarepants addon beyond a short description that Mojang provided in a recent article, but players should be able to get a good idea of what they can expect. According to Mojang, the addon adds SpongeBob, his friends, and many inhabitants of Bikini Bottom as residents to your in-game worlds and brings along tons of new items and blocks.

Mojang states that players will take on "wild adventures" with Bikini Bottom's memorable characters including catching jellyfish, protecting the Krusty Krab's secret recipe, and finding Gary the Snail, who has seemingly gone missing. All the while, players can use the new blocks and items including blueprints to construct some of the iconic buildings seen in Bikini Bottom.

The new blocks include furniture as well as vehicles like boatmobiles, so players will likely have a great time piecing together memorable parts of SpongeBob Squarepants while also forging creations of their own. Villains including Plankton, the Flying Dutchman, and DoodleBob are also up to no good, and players may have to put a stop to their plans on top of everything else.

Pricing has yet to be revealed for this new SpongeBob addon, but Mojang may reveal more information about this collaboration as August 20 approaches. In the meantime, players can hop into the Bedrock Edition dressing room and claim a free "Imaginaaaation Rainbow" headware Minecraft cosmetic from the SpongeBob series.

Additionally, a SpongeBob Squarepants mash-up skin pack can also be purchased and downloaded via the Minecraft Marketplace now, providing 40 skins to don avatars with to have plenty of Bikini Bottom adventures until the SpongeBob addon is ready to be downloaded on August 20. Hopefully, this new collaborative DLC lives up to the expectations of players.
