Minecraft offers 16 different dyes of various colors. These dyes help players change the color of wool, carpet, terracotta, concrete powder, stained glass, shulker boxes, firework stars, and candles. However, not every in-game dye is easy to collect, as some are really rare to produce depending on a player's environment and current situation.
Dye rarity can fluctuate slightly based on a player's Minecraft seed and what's immediately available to them near their spawn point.
Rare dyes in Minecraft: All you need to know
The Rarest Dye - Brown
Chart New Territories with the ultimate Minecraft Seed Generator!
Out of all dyes, and depending on a player's Minecraft seed, brown dye can be the rarest of its kind. This is because, in Survival Mode, brown dye can only be harvested from cocoa beans, which are found in cocoa pods growing on trees in jungle biomes. If players are unable to find a jungle biome in their world, it can be quite a while before they procure this specific dye.
Fortunately, brown dye isn't usually favored all that much compared to other colors. While it's rare, it isn't exactly sought after in the way more common dyes are.
Rare Dyes
This collection of dyes in Minecraft incorporates those considered rare, but they're easier to access on average when compared to brown dye. However, compared to the more common dyes that are readily available across multiple biomes and can be crafted with much more frequency, these dyes can be hard to come by.
The dyes considered rare can be found below, though keep in mind that the rarity can fluctuate depending on the world seed:
- Black Dye: Obtained from breaking down squid ink sacs and wither roses
- Gray Dye: Obtained by combining black and white dyes
- Lime Dye: Obtained by combining white and green dyes or smelting sea pickles
- Cyan Dye: Obtained by combining blue and green dyes or breaking down pitcher plants
- Light Blue Dye: Obtained by combining blue and white dyes or by breaking down blue orchids
As previously noted, depending on a player's spawn point and world seed, some dyes may not be as rare or common. This ranking is collated based on averages, the distribution of the resources used to craft the dyes, and their availability through various methods and in different locations.
