Minecraft is often characterized as a family-friendly game, and for the most part, it is. However, there are a few elements of horror sprinkled in here and there, such as villager zombification, piglins not being native to the Nether as they lack fire resistance, and endermen being directly named after the Slenderman. Cave sounds are also shockingly scary, especially if they catch a player off guard.

This makes the use of a horror-themed texture pack a great way to elevate these terrifying elements and make the game seem brand new. 10 of the best scary texture and resource packs currently available to players can be found detailed below, along with what makes these packs so effective.

10 scary Minecraft texture and resource packs

This fully-fledged Minecraft texture pack features a totally new artistic vibe. The blocks and items found within the pack all feature a rougher, hand-drawn feel that almost feels like stylized metal aesthetic art.

This is reminiscent of another survival game with horror elements: Don't Starve. This style makes sense, as the rougher lines help to sell the sense of dread and insanity that the pack is trying to instill.

The Deep Dark Overhaul texture pack aims to completely revamp the deep dark Minecraft biome into a new, and even more horrifying, place to visit. The blues and blacks of vanilla sculk have been replaced with whites and reds, resembling decaying and bleeding flesh. The warden's texture is also freakish. It seems to have ripped open at the front, in quite a visceral way for pixel art graphics.

3) Juno's Creeping Horrors

What makes Juno's Creeping Horrors, or Juno's Horrors for short, such a compelling horror texture pack is just how subtly it chooses to play things. Rather than featuring blatant gore, the scares are smaller and easier to miss.

For example, many different flowers seem to have eyes within their petals, always watching players. Carved pumpkins also appear slightly more sinister but in an almost imperceptible way. Nether quartz Minecraft ore has also been updated to resemble bones more than it already does. Eyes have also been incorporated into many other textures, but the terror is more effective if those remain a mystery.

This subtle, building terror would work especially well with many different Minecraft horror mods, as it will help to keep tension high when the monsters from the mods aren't around.

4) Gray's Mob Overhaul

As the name might give away, Gray's Mob Overhaul is a texture pack that aims to revamp the look and feel of every mob. While most passive mobs ended up being cute, the same cannot be said for the game's hostile mobs. Zombies are especially awful, as their heads are essential giant mouths, with eyeballs embedded in their palms to track players.

Endermen also have a strange alien-like form, even sporting antennae. Endermen legs are also different and bend in ways much more similar to canine creatures than humanoids, making the beast feel even more otherworldly.

The Nether also shows its hellish inspiration much more. Ghasts have wings similar to biblically accurate angels, wither skeletons have upright demon horns, and blaze hunt players down with goat heads instead of basic cube heads.

5) Bloody Sculltopia

Bloody Sculltopia is another texture pack aimed at making the deep dark biomes even more atmospheric and terrifying. Sculk blocks have been converted into shades of red. Minecraft's warden mob is also sporting a new look, seemingly inspired by the aesthetics of analog horror that have recently taken the internet by storm.

This resource pack does a few other interesting things, such as converting all soul fires and items into red rather than blue, along with changing the appearance of deepslate to red as well. This ends up making the resource pack feel cohesive and whole, helping to sell the pack's terrifying vision.

The Better Spider Remastered resource pack aims to make the giant spiders that wander the game much more horrific than they already are. It accomplishes this goal by making them even larger and more realistic-looking. Rather than the straight-out, awkward legs that the current arachnids have, these spiders boast normal arched legs and can run like real-world spiders after players.

Seeing a more realistic model, in addition to better movement, is definitely enough to land this resource pack among the game's scariest.

Unlike the other resource packs listed here, Ultra Horror Texture is a premium pack available on the Minecraft Marketplace for 1340 minecoins. However, the quality of the resource pack more than justifies the price. Most block and item textures resemble what one would see in a pretty good medieval texture pack.

The real horror elements of the pack are found in many different mobs. Striders have a maw of multisized fangs, Minecraft endermen track players with piercing jet-black eyes, and pillagers have an aggressive, almost manic look to them. Even passive mobs, such as pigs, horses, and villagers, look like they're potential threats.

DSWG Glowing Eyes For Monsters, or Glowing Eyes for short, is a Minecraft resource pack that, as the name suggests, adds glowing eyes to the game's many hostile mobs. This effect is subtle but incredibly effective.

The eyes of hostile Minecraft mobs can pierce even the darkest of caves and lock directly onto players, which is quite creepy and is sure to get the adrenaline going.

9) F.O.G. Shader

F.O.G. Shader adds a thick carpet of fog over the player's entire Minecraft survival world. This is quite reminiscent of the thick fog that the Silent Hill franchise has made iconic, which helps sell the terror that the shader brings.

Note that this isn't a Java shader but instead a resource pack that can take advantage of Bedrock's Render Dragon experimental lighting changes to function.

The Terraria Demon Eye resource pack incorporates a 3D version of the Demon Eye enemy from Terraria into Mojang's blocky masterpiece as a replacement for the phantom. There's something fundamentally awful about being chased at all, let alone by a disembodied floating eyeball.
