Axolotls are cute but cunning mobs in Minecraft. They were added to the game in 2021 with the 1.17 Caves and Cliffs update. They initially spawned in deep oceans but were shifted to the new Lush Caves biome. Axolotls are one of the first mobs that can actively help players against various underwater enemies.

Though they are one of the cutest mobs in the game, they can be quite dangerous to other entities.

Axolotls are completely passive towards players and will never harm them, even if the latter attacks them. When it comes to mobs, however, they are not too kind.

These creatures primarily attack hostile underwater mobs like drowned zombies, guardians, and elder guardians. Along with them, they also attack all passive underwater mobs except turtles, dolphins, frogs, and other axolotls. This means that they can attack mobs like cod, salmon, tropical fish, squids, glow squids, pufferfish, and even little tadpoles.

They have a tendency to prioritize killing hostile mobs if they detect them nearby before hunting down passive mobs.

Axolotls can deal one heart (2 health points) worth of damage with each of their attacks. After killing a passive mob, they go into a two-minute cooldown before attacking another passive creature.

While fighting hostile mobs, axolotls use a unique technique that occasionally gives them an upper hand. During a fight, they have a feature to play dead for 10 seconds whenever they are hit by an underwater enemy. This is to fool their opponent so that they don't get attacked. While playing dead, they recover their health before jumping back into the fight.

This technique is always used by these creatures to keep themselves alive while gradually weakening mobs like drowned, guardians, and elder guardians.

Furthermore, if a player is with them and is attacking the same enemy, they detect them as allies and apply a regeneration status effect to the player as well, offering them health.

How to get an axolotl in Minecraft?

To get axolotls, players will have to explore the Overworld caves until they find a Lush Caves since that is the only biome in which these creatures spawn. Once a Lush Cave is found, explorers can look in water puddles to find axolotls. To capture the mob, players will have to craft a bucket and fill it with water. Once they have a water bucket, it can be used on the axolotl to get it into the bucket.

After capturing, the axolotl can remain as an item in the bucket or be used again on a block, which spills the water along with the creature.
