In Minecraft, the skeleton trap is a rare event that takes place during a thunderstorm — it starts with a skeleton horse spawning in the world during the storm.

You must be cautious if you encounter the skeleton horse while exploring the overworld. If you are lured towards the rare mob and go too close to it, lightning will strike, and an army of skeleton horses ridden by skeletons will appear. This event will start as soon as you are within ten blocks of the skeleton horse.

The Skeleton Trap consists of four different skeleton horses with skeletons riding them. Each skeleton will be wearing an enchanted iron helmet and brandishing an enchanted bow. When you attempt to defend yourself, skeleton horses will strafe and the skeletons will use their bows and arrows to strike.

Obtaining the skeleton horse

One of the main reasons why players get into the skeleton horse trap is because they want to see the rare skeleton horse itself. The mob has a bleak chance of spawning in the world, the highest being 6.75% in hard mode.

Hence, if you want to get the skeleton horse, you will have to purposefully trap yourself and defeat all four skeletons in the trap. However, ensure not to kill the skeleton horse itself. If you want all four skeleton horses, you must carefully fight and kill the skeletons riding them.

After the skeletons are dead, skeleton horses become a passive mob, similar to regular horses. Thankfully, you need not tame these special undead horses after the fight since they already spawn in a tamed state. They can directly be ridden without any issue and can also be saddled.
